    to those stewmac uke kits!

I bought him a concert-size one for Christmas, and he built it in like a week. He’s done a fair bit of woodworking (he built us a sweet rocking chair for our wedding), and he’s into building models of stuff, like highly detailed planes and steam engines, but he’d never built an instrument before. Anyway, he enjoyed it so much he asked for a tenor kit. It’s in the mail as I type.

I was a bit worried because the instructions are in English, and his English isn’t great, but I guess it’s enough to read and understand the pictures.

I’d like to try one of these myself some time, but I got this other thing going...

I’ve looked into ukulele, mandolin, bass and guitar kits. I already know that if I start one I’ll become obsessed. I try not to look at them anymore. I hope your father in law enjoys them.

So he finished it in a week, huh?

    (Was it DPP?)

Yeah, I had the same sordid thought—are you gonna offer to send it over with the 335 and have it finished at the same time? I wonder how DPP would translate in Japanese? I don’t suppose it would matter, because he’d never speak to you again anyway.:oops:

He stained the first one, and sort of regretted it because it came out a lot darker than he expected.

I hope he just puts some shellac or T-O type stuff on this next one.

I have an older retired friend who started by building a mountain dulcimer and ended up building a bunch of them for his grandchildren. Then he built a Hammered dulcimer and built two of those. Then he took a class in building a violin. Then he built a bouzouki and now he is building a weissenborn.

I'm now trying to talk him into building a hurdy gurdy next.

Ha, that's really cool. Any chance we can see the rocker? I'm kinda interested in furniture ... a traditional design?

Sorry it’s up in the loft at the moment. :)

It’s a pretty basic design, not ornate at all, though he routed our initials in the headrest area.

Thanks anyway. Do you have to bring it down every time F.i.l threatens to come around

Yep, he played guitar in his younger days, then switched to uke and a bit of lap steel. Then he picked up bass, because his grampa Hawaiian band lost their bass player and nobody else could do it. I think he’s most comfortable on uke these days.

It’s a loft and not an attic because it’s not tall enough to stand up in. Just a bunch of stuff stored up there.
