    I don't know if I have anything to add after all the great players listed.

    I might suggest Eddie Cochran and Elvis Costello. Honorable mention: David Byrne.

    You don't have to be a virtuoso to be an influential player.

    I see that Townshend & Wilko Johnson have already been mentioned (rightly so) but they have both acknowledged their stylistic debt to the late great Mick Green of The Pirates. As do I.

    Hard to believe that I got through the best part of four pages and no mention of Hank Marvin.

    His playing inspired very many of those already named to pick up a guitar in the first place and then find their own voices

    One of my favourites, the great Lenny Breau, had non-jazz guitar influences like Chet Atkins & flamenco guitar. He was known to carry a Renoir print in his guitar case for inspiration, and once described himself as “a colorist, adding different colours and shades by using different techniques and touching the guitar in different ways.” He’s a great example of an outside-the-box artist
