You can have Purgatory, or trade it for what's behind Door #3...

My buddy is the live, on-air musician for Let's Make A Deal (Cat Gray), and they were filming the show today. I'll talk with him tonight because I'm sure they are having a proper sendoff for Monty.

Man, not a bad life at all, but two legends this week. First Hugh, now Monty. Both made it into their 90's, which is incredible.

Spent ages trying to work out this counter-intuitive problem.

One of the mods over at KVR who was a programmer did a little program to show the concept. I spent ages trying to explain it to people. One, who was grand chess master level, just could not get it.

    God rest you Monty Hall.

Once this problem gets in your brain, it's hard to shake.

I've had people still not get it even when shown every possible combination.

One way to explain it is that Monty will never open the door with the prize.

Another is to expand the problem to 100 doors. You pick, and Monty opens all the other doors but 1. You originally had a 1% chance, and because only doors without the prize get opened, your chance is now a lot better.

    RIP Monty.

There was a time when I thought I was a reasonably intelligent person. But I have to confess, it took my son more than a few minutes to convince me that my chances of winning were double if I would just ALWAYS switch my choice. Counter-intuitive to this old, calcified brain for sure. But I guess I shouldn't feel too bad. My son is a fourth year Industrial Engineering student at Georgia Tech (# 1 Industrial Engineering program in the country), and one of his professors thought it significant enough to discuss the Monty Hall problem in class. Apparently I'm not the only one who can be surprisingly resistant to the obvious. :)

This thread made me think of Carol Merrill. I guess she's still with us.
