This band with Rick Holmstrom on guitar is just a machine. So good . And Mavis ?

Continues to amaze and is Pop’s daughter thru and thru because the main instrument in an 80 yr old woman’s band is a screaming guitar !

    Oh - and she’s rocking some Van’s !

There’s a Guitar Player magazine podcast where Rick talks about how he was able to afford the 53 only because it was so destroyed and he brought it back. He definitely deserves it.

    Very cool.

Some different backing vocals, but this was basically the lineup I saw her with when she did the Gospel Tent at the New Orleans Jazz Fest, a few years back. That stage has never seen better.

And it wasn't real crowded, either. The Less Enlightened were at the Acura Stage. Such a nice show, Mavis and Rick.

That's badass and they don't sing or play a note that the song doesn't need.

We saw Ms. Staples w/ that band a couple years back. What a great show (although she did tell Holmstrom to turn down once).

They opened for Keb Mo, who I've seen before but his show that night was like watching paint dry compared to the incredible Ms Staples. To maintain the musicial buzz of Mavis we left after a few of Keb's songs.

    That was killer.

I caught the last of her set at Hardly Strictly last year. I was informed I missed her doing Slippery People by Talking Heads. Damn.

I love Mavis Staples. Though I wish at times she'd use a different git player, I get weary of Holstrom's "vintage blues" approach to every song.
