A guy contacted me earlier this year and wanted to commission a guitar as a gift for his best man. The wedding was scheduled for October 2018. He ordered it and paid in full. Well, he texted me about a month ago and asked if I could possibly have it done sooner.

    "When?", I asked

    "January?", he said

    o_Oo_O

Since I've got a 2-year waiting list on commissioned builds, I told him there's just no way.

Well, I always enjoy a challenge, so I'm going to see if I can actually get it done.

    - mahogany thinline body with a walnut top
    - maple neck
    - macasser ebony fretboard
    - dual F holes
    - firebird pickups
    - best man's last name inlaid in the upper horn in a dark wood (I'll use katalox)

The mahogany I started with was rough sawn at 2" thick and had a substantial cup to it.

Luckily I've now got a drum sander, so I was able to get it dimensioned just fine and glued up.

    Here's the walnut top

I'll be using this flamed maple for the neck.

Wow, talk about a challenge! Hope you have time to post, sounds like its gonna be a good one, too! Walnut top is gorgeous.

I'm on the verge of walking away from a commission just now, may post about it later. Just has some hinkey-ness giving me a less than comfortable feeling about it. Wife picked up on it too, and wants me to bail.

But except for the rush, this one sounds like a great project--and don't you just love the drum sander?

What's the guy's name? I have a plan that involves breaking up his marriage, becoming very good friends with him and finding him a new wife...

Slow & steady. You'll have plenty of time left over.

Glad to hear your business is doing so well.

Yeah. It'll definitely be a challenge to get it done for the wedding, but I'll give it a shot. It'll be nice to get another one out the door so quickly.

The drum sander is a God send. It's such a huge time saver and helps me to get much better results. I think it saved me at least a day's work yesterday while I was prepping all the wood.

    :D

Thanks, Chris. No. No blue. Of course with my penchant for self abuse, I'm sure one will come along, and I won't be able to say no.

Thanks, nosmo. It's been a wild ride for sure. The funny thing is that I don't actively advertise my guitars, and I've been turning away commissions. I'm focused more on the strap business right now.

Thanks, Herb. Speaking of gorgeous wood, did you see the last pen I turned (I posted it in the What's on your workbench thread)? I used the last piece of spalted maple you sent me. It is STUNNING!

Thanks, Macro. That's a piece that I got from a member here about 5 years ago. I used part of it to build my walnut-topped guitar, and it's just been sitting on the top shelf of my wood rack since then.

Went right to the shop after getting home from work tonight. Got the body routed and sanded and got most of the waste removed in preparation for routing the chambers.

This is going to be a REALLY light guitar.

Looking forward to it. I built a very similar guitar last year. Same materials except birds eye instead of flame maple. It really didn't take that many hours except for the binding (really the scraping after was a bigger pain) and hollowing out. I have no doubt it will sound and look awesome!

No binding on this one. It will have a burst finish, though.

Not quite. I didn't even make it into the shop last night. I was dead tired when I got home from work, and it's starting to get cold here now, too, which means my shop time is miserable since it's not heated or cooled.

    Thanks.
