Hello to all here on this very informative forum. My name is Gil in Tenn. I am age 65 and have beeen taking guitar lessons for a 14 months now and practice about 1 hour every day. I ahve learned the major modal scales and the minor pentatonic scales and have learned some about theory. However I love the old Luther Perkins licks and lead music and as i have learned pretty well to get the boom chick boom beat ,the melody or the part Luther plays i have not been to figure out and really want to learn by ear and have been listening over and over to his songs. Can anyone give some advice on how to achieve this thing?

    Thanks Gil:(

Hey Gil, you might want to google 'youtube' and "luther perkins". You'll find some hits including our very own Lerb21's instructional vids for learning Luther's boom-chick style of playing (here) as well as his breakdown of Folsom Prison Blues.

Luther's lead stuck to major scales, here's and 'E' major scale played out.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ---------------1-2----------------------------------------------------------
    --------0-2-4----------------------------------------------------------------
    -0-2-4-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The intro to "I Walk The Line" follows this nearly note for note

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------0--0-0-----------------------------------1----------
    --------0---0-0-2-4---0-----4-2-0---0-0--------2-2--------2--2-0------
    -0-2-4---0-------------------------0------4-2-0------0-2-0--------4-2-0

Luther's boom chicka boom was basically a bass line with an extra note thrown in, often the root note of the chord they were on only up and octave. Luther also did bass runs between chords. Heres an E to and A walk.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
    ---2---2------------2--2---------------------------------------------
    -----2------------0------0-------------------------------------------
    -0------0-0-2-4------0----------------------------------------------

    E to B7, back down to E

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    --2---2-------------1---1-------------2----2---------------------------------------
    ----2--------0-1-2--------2-0-----------2-------------------------------------------
    -0-----0--4-----------2--------4-2-0--------0--------------------------------------

Here's some Folsom Prison Blues Tab

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    --------1-1--------------------------------------------------------------
    -2-2-2-----2-------------------------------------------------------------
    --------------2-0---------------------------------------------------------

    (Repeat this once more)
    -------7-10-7-10-7-----7-10-7-10--------------------------------
    --8-9---------------8-9--------------------------------------------
    --------------------------------------------------------------------
    --------------------------------------------------------------------
    --------------------------------------------------------------------
    --------------------------------------------------------------------

    Transition into the A chord

    -7----------
    ---9--------
    -----9------
    -------------
    -------------
    -------------

There's been arguments for years how to play the A section between us Luther Copy cats, but I know that he utilises open strings and the following positions. This is how I play them.

    -----5----------5-0----------5-0----------9-0---------------------
    -------2------------0------5------0----10-----0-------------------
    ---2-----2----2---------6------------9----------------------------
    --------------------------------------------------------------------
    -0----------0------------------------------------------------------
    --------------------------------------------------------------------

Luther then goes back down to the nut (to the E chord), hit the low E string and strums a full E chord in rhythm. Use your ear, you'll pick it up. He continues striking the E string on beat one of each measure.

Then we come to the B7. After the first lick he hits the B in the same manner as the E above. Same rhythm when strumming the chord. Then you have the walk down. (second lick)

    --------------------------------------------------------------------
    --------------------------------------------------------------------
    --------------------------------------------------------------------
    ---------------------1---1---1-------------------------------------
    -0-1-2------------2---2---1---------------------------------------
    --------------------------------2-0--------------------------------

Those Eb one the D strings are supposed to be played as 8th notes, like in the regular boom chicka boom. Your ear will catch on.

It's important to note a few things. This is tab I made for the live at Folsom Album. They are tuned up 1/2 step, so their E chord would actually be an F. Luther is tuned up a little bit more, so he's almost in the the key of F and a half.

In order for these tabs to be correct, you'd have to tune up, or add 1 to all the numbers and/or play with a capo.

How about 'Hey Porter'. I've seen guys play the beginning of the solo in three different positions, but the notes are always the same. I'll show you how I play it. :D

Intro: Luther also does a little strumming in the beginning.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------------------------
    --------2-----2------2-----------------------------------------
    -2b-0-----0------0--------------------------------------------

Inbetween the E and B notes the should be a 'and a' strum of a E chord muted. It's counted "One and a Two and a". Once again, your ear will catch on.

then we have the solo (how I play it, anywho)

    ------------4-4-4-4-4--------------------------4-4-4-4-3-2-2-2p0-----
    -5-5-5-5-5------------5-5-5-0h2---5-5-5-5-5---------------------4-0-
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Note about the hammer on and pull off: It sounds like Luther does this quite a bit in the solo, I'm note sure if it's intentional. Once again your ear will catch on. Most of the hammer ons are from open strings to the frets that I've noted.)

    ----------------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------------------------
    -2-2-2-2-2-5-5-5-5-4-5-5-4-4-2------------------------------
    -----------------------------------4----------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------------------------

    ----------------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------------------------
    -2-2-2-2-------------------------------------------------------
    ----------4-2-4-2-2-4--2-X-2-0---------------------------------
    ---------------------------------2-0--3-2-0--------------------

Sometimes Luther's note are very hard to hear. It's hard to tell whether or not Luther's making a mistake. For example, the X indicates a mute, It's hard for me to hard whether or not he's muting the note, hitting the open A string, or doing other wise. Regardless, when it's played up to speed, it sounds just fine. Also that last the 3 2 0, could be a 4 2 0, it's hard to hear. I know that Luther sometimes like to throw that minor stuff in. Once again, it sounds good either way.

Get Rhythm. It's important to note that this was recorded at Sun Records, so it's quite possible that Luther wasn't playing so fast in the chorus, and that Sam just added very quick slapback to the guitar track. Either way, I'll show you the notes if Luther wasn't playing it so fast. You can just double the notes and it'll sound like the record.

    E chord A chord
    ----------------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------------------------
    -2---2---2---2-----2-4-2-4-2-4-2-----------------------------
    ---4---4---4---4-----------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------------------------

The ending lick of the chorus is hard to dissect, it's so quiet and blend so well with the vocal. This is something like it, it follows the vocal at least.

    When You Get The Blues
    ----------------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------------------------
    -2-----4----5---4---2------------------------------------------
    ---------------------------4-2----------------------------------
    --------------------------------2-0-----------------------------

Then Luther goes into his normal Boom Chicka Boom thang.

Then you have the solo. Heres the high jangly part.

    --------12-12-------------12-12----------5-5--------5-5------
    ----12--------12------12---------12----5-----5----5-----5----
    -13----------------13-----------------6----------6------------
    ----------------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------------------------

Then you have the lower part. I'm listening very carefully the 'ghost notes' (those created by slapback) and will omit them.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------
    ------------------------------------------------------------------
    ------------------------------------------------------------------
    -2--2--2---2--2--2---2-4-2-4-2-4-2-4-2-4--4-4-5-4-2---------
    --4--4--4---4--4--4-------------------------------------4-2-----
    --------------------------------------------------------------3-0-

Luther throw a few mutes and scratches in there as well. For the 100th time, listen and your ear will catch on.

Here's a nice and simple one: Luther Played the Boogie.

Intro: after you strike the 2nd fret on the A string (B note) at the end of each phrase, strum the bottom strings of a fingered E chord. Your ear will catch on (again). Same goes for the chord (except when it switches to the A chord, you'll strum and A chord instead)

    ----------------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------------------------
    -2-------2-------2-------2-------------------------------------
    ---4-2-0-----------4-2-0--------------------------------------

    Solo

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
    ------------------------2------2---2------2--------------------------
    -2------2---2------2----4-2-0------4-2-0---2------2---2-------2---
    --4-2-0------4-2-0---------------------------4-2-0------4-2-0------

    ------2-2------------------------------------------------------------
    -0-0------0----------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
    -------------2-0-----------------------------------------------------

No real surprises. As in most of the Sun Records, they're tuned up 3/4 of a step.

Big River: You know the part where Johnny plays a G chord? I've seen video of Luther staying on an E chord so that it creates a 3rd.

Here's the video (look! They have a Luther Cam)

Big River....interesting. The song is in F. Johnny and Luther are tuned up a half step. THe second rhythm guitarist is tuned to E...regular tuning...and you can see him playing F. He also plays the barred Bb at the 6th fret.
