I want to get a boost pedal that can also provide some hair/grit to the signal but not necessarily to any extreme, just enough. Having some tone shaping abilities would also be useful.

The TC Electronic Spark (full size) comes to mind, what else or alternative would you suggest...

Depends very much on your amp (among other things), but the Naga Viper is my favorite boost. It a treble booster, but that shouldn't necessarily scare you off. It adds a push to a clean amp and has a tone control to dial bass back into the signal. Works nicely with other pedals too.

Does that boost into "fuzz territory"?

I use a soul food. You have to turn it up a good bit before the hair appears. So it makes a good clean boost also. Platefire

Sounds like a KLONE is right up your alley. ^The Soul Food (go with the JHS modded one), Wampler Tumnus, or J. Rockett Archer would certainly do the job!

Chandler tube driver if you can find one. Mild to middy gain.

The Seymour Duncan Booster I once had was pretty cool. It was used and I was getting some radio interference so I took it back. Not sure if that is a common problem or not.

The Durham Electronics Sex Drive works fantastically for that application if you plan on it being an always-on pedal.

I use a Timmy with the gain set low for exactly that application.
