    Hey guys,

    How are we all?

Over the last 6 months ive been thinking of packing it all up here in Australia and heading to Nashville. I've been playing for 13 years now and gigging professionally for almost 10 years. My biggest concern is that I know no one who lives there and basically I'm just throwing this out there to see who is there, what the scene is like and whether or not you've got room for another guitar player.
At the moment im making a living teaching, working in a music shop, recording and gigging. The country scene in Melbourne is not great, and country music and guitar playing is starting to dominate my life so I figured i should be where it's happening.

So any advice you guys have for making the trek over would be amazing. I know I'm asking a really broad question here but anything you guys can throw at me would be great.

    Thanks a lot guys.

    Mitch

From all that I have read or heard, Nashville is probably the most competitive place for a guitar player in the world. Unless you are one of the top 10 or so guitar players in the country and know some of the most important people in the business there, your chances of hitting it big are near zero. I have heard that Austin Texas is our "REAL" country music city for aspiring musicians.. And your chances there are way, way better.. But you may like it in Nashville.... I wouldn't even give it a thought, from all the stories that I have heard about it.. I think I would consider moving to where you are from, before considering Nashville.. You might absolutely love Austin...

There's thirteen hundred and fifty two guitar pickers in Nashville . . .

Whatever making it means. There are fantastic musicians playing for tips there. You'll need a day job too. Something that might be hard to get.

PM Big John and Mandy and several others on this forum who make a living in Music in Austin. Follow your dreams, BUT make sure you have a plan. Austin is also competitive as are most music centric cities. Don't you know Keith Urban?:D

Come to Canada instead. Country music is very popular, and you won't have the huge competition in Nashville.

They should put up a big digital counter that changes every time another guitar player moves to Nashville.

    Every half hour or so:

    1352

    1353

    1354

Here is a song that captures Nashville. Might have to read between the lines, put your tongue in your check, your mileage may vary, ect :

I was born at the Ryman Auditorium
During the Martha White portion of the "Grand Ole' Opry"
Roy Acuff cut off my umbilical
And tied me off with his yo-yo string

It was easy growing up for me in Nashville
"Music City" has always been good to me
There's room for you, and your cowboy boots
We'll even get you a rhinestone suit
You don't even have to sing on key
Producers with computers can fix it all in Nashville, Tennessee

So come and visit me in "Music City"
We'll drink all night and write songs no one will sing
In pick up bars, the country stars
    Playing Japanese guitars
Come and visit me in Nashville, Tennessee

The hills are filled with naked hee-haw honeys
Who all sing along in perfect harmony
The worlds greatest living guitar pickers
Can deliver you a pizza or sell you weed

Guitar strings grow on shrubs and maple trees
Guitar picks stumble out of gumball machines
Record deals fly in and out like happy bumblebees
    The cops carry capos
In case you want to change your key

So come and visit me in "Music City"
We'll drink all night and write songs no one will sing
In pick up bars, the country stars
    Playing Japanese guitars
Come and visit me in Nashville, Tennessee

Plus we are similar to Australia in many ways, ways in which America isn't, so you might feel more at home. Calgary would be a good place to start.

There a famous quote that Australia is Canada in a thong, but I can't remember who said it.

Corb Lund is one of my current all time favorite artists. He seems to present country with a Canadian bent that's really:D refreshing...
