I have a 86' MIJ Strat that has been out of service for a couple years. This guitar had a crazy 17 way switching system and Seymour Duncans installed. It has been feeling Spring like lately and I decided to give it a rebirth. I found some solder in my cargo shorts and used it to wire it up with a standard 5 way switch. Not realizing it was LEAD FREE solder. After I was done I plugged it in, using my directional cable, and noticed the tone was much less heavy. Almost tinny. Anybody else had this issue?

Ha, the cargo shorts reference was a nice touch. Well played, sir.

It's hard to say. Ever since going gluten free, the pH balance of my ear wax has changed and all tones sound more organic now. How I long for the bad diet and heavy thick tones of my youth...

I believe we have just lurched into the first directional solder debate.

Did you hold the soldering gun in your right hand or the left?
Did you hold it right side up, or upside down?
How about the outlet you were plugged into?
Was the positive on the correct side, or were they reversed?
Was it an odd day of the month or an even?
    Moon phase?

I swear if I heard this guitar, I'd have the answer to all these questions, because my hearing is just that sensitive.

Simple...do not use lead free solder, ever, for anything, unless you're going to eat it. Throw out any you have, at least you don't have to feel guilty about sending lead to the landfill.

If you tinned the wires before soldering that might explain some of the tinny sound. Try a cold solder joint.

Being ambidextrous I use my right hand to solder. As an electrician I know the polarity is correct and the outlet is right side up. Except for in Ohio. I hear upside down is right side up in Ohio.

You might find the tone to be 'Sn'-appier...

I only use solder free lead on my guitars, it gives me a much better heavy metal tone.

Just put it back under your bed and forget about it. With that 17-way switching I can only see it increasing in value.
