    Dear musicians,

We hope this note finds you well. We are no longer able to monetarily compensate you for your performances, starting the week of May 28th. We know that some of you are on the schedule, we hope this note gives you enough time to adjust your schedule. If you do choose to come back to __________, we will gladly offer you pizza and beer as a compensation for your performance.

If you would like to perform an unpaid gig, please fill out the attached worksheet.

    Thank You,
    _______________

    Dear Venue,

We will need 25 pizzas and 5 cases of beer, or vice versa.

    Thank you.

I left out the sender and venue name for privacy reasons.

FYI, previously the venue was paying $150 for a 3 hour show. We played it a few times as a trio. My wife and her friends loved the place. They seem to do a very good business. It is always packed!

Ain't that the truth! Honestly, when I was 20, I would have played this place every night for beer and pizza, and those pizza/beer quantities are not far off! And hopefully some local kids like that with bands will get in on it!

I do wonder if they'll just wind up with a bunch of crappy bands though.

As someone who is a sometimes professional musician, and a full-time restaurateur (over two decades at it now), I can sympathize with both sides. What strikes me as the biggest issue is the venue saying even though you're already on the schedule - i.e. there is an agreement in place already- we won't pay you. They should honor their agreements, and then look to booking for pizza and beer if that's the route they want to go.

Sorry you go this memo @Junkyard Dog.

I don't think I'd eat there anymore. Funny thing, a guy I work with sometimes is a seriously good keyboardist. He was talking to guy that just opened a bar here about playing there. I asked him if it was going to be a paying gig. Then his eyes kind of opened wide and he told me he didnt even think to bring that up. Well if you start out playing for free good luck getting paid later

Just a joke, just a joke ... making fun of the pile-on craziness that poor JYD got on the other post.

I'm a part time picker...40-50 gigs a year. So it's not really killing me financially. And I was only getting $50/gig at this place as it was. BUT, I do know some full time pickers that play there...worse for them.

At least they are upfront about it, rather than informing you after the gig.

I agree that they should have honored all the gigs booked for pay, and stated that after date x they would only be booking for B&P.

    Let's do the math...

Pay a band $150 for a 3 hour set every Friday and Saturday. $1200 or so a month.

Buy a good karaoke system $2000 or so assuming a good sound system already. Host a karaoke contest with each entrant paying a $20 entry fee, system pays for itself in a month or so. People buy more drinks to get drunk enough to sing. Mo money. Host "Ladies Karaoke Night" on weekdays. Mo money.

Well, you were only getting $50/gig. I would probably just spend that $50 on pizza and beer anyway, so...
