I'll be building another guitar for Needtobreathe and their next charity event in April 2018, and it won't be a Tele this time.

Bo sent me an email a few weeks ago with a pic of a guitar that caught his eye.

He likes funky, cool stuff, and really liked the offset and the multiple textures of the metal/plastic pickguard.

He's been playing a Jazzmaster on the current tour, so I figured I'd kind of do a mashup.

It'll be a JM made from the roasted swamp ash body I got from GuitarWoodExperts.com last year. I'll do a burst finish with an animal print pg with metal sections like a Jaguar pickguard.

It'll have a maple Tele neck with a reversed headstock and a pau ferro fretboard. For pickups, we'll go with Jazzmaster style wound by my favorite pickup guy ;).

Also thinking of doing a Bigsby on it as well.

So here's the body fresh from the band saw:

And I can't decide if I want to go with birdseye or flamed maple for the neck.

I like that your guitars have backstories as well as mojo, Roger!

Bird eye would look very funky... might balance the animal print nicely.

I love an offset, looking forward to seeing this progress!

    Thanks, djh.

    I know, right? :D

Thanks, Mat. That's what I was thinking as well, hence my post below...

Thank ya, Rick. I'm pretty excited about this one. It's been several years since I've made a JM.

    Thank you, reb.

So as Mat figured out, I decided to go with birds eye maple for the neck on this one. I think it'll really pop with everything else.

Dec 3 was the last update?? No wonder I've been stressed about this build. It's due by mid April, and I've not made much progress at all... until today! BOOM!!

Seriously, I spent about 9 hours in the shop tonight to get just about all of that work done. The body is ready for grain fill now. That last shot is just some denatured alcohol to show off the color/grain. I'm hoping to talk Bo into just a clear coat or oil finish to show that off. He did change his mind on the pickguard and wanted a wood one, so I glued this up tonight.

I'll ebonize it so it'll stand out nicely against the roasted swamp ash.

Most of my day tomorrow will be spent a couple hours south for my mom's birthday, and then Sunday will be full with church stuff and an 11 mile run, so I don't think much more progress will happen until next Friday. It feels good getting things moved this far along, though.

That's a great looking guitar, and I have to say a very nice looking nut slot you've cut, Roger ;)

Just saw this post for the first time tonight, and if it's due in mid April you have some work ahead of you! If you go with a natural finish, do you know what you'll use as a grain filler before you finish it?

    I'll pore fill with Timbermate.

Loads of progress over the past weekend up to now.

This is where things stood after Sunday—

Monday and Tuesday I spent finish sanding and spraying a base coat. Tonight I started with the burst coats.

I've got to apply probably 2 or 3 darker coats around the edge and then the clear, which I hope to have done this Saturday.

I also got the frets leveled/crowned tonight as well. I just need to finish polishing, which I should have done tomorrow night. All in all, I'm on target to have it buttoned up by the 2nd week of April.
