Box of Rain sounds like a Tele, but I've never heard him play like that. If that wasn't him, who was it? Did he ever use a Tele?

David Nelson of the New Riders Of The Purple Sage on a B-bender Telecaster.

Jerry played the George Harrison Rosewood Tele in a jam on The Festival Express.

If I remember correctly, that's David Nelson on Box of Rain, and he did indeed play a Tele. There's a little footage of Garcia jamming on a Tele in the Festival Express movie.

Cool info guys. I saw the Dead's American Beauty tour w. the NRPS as the front band & failed to notice that...but I was new to guitar back then. All these years thought it was pedal steel...and I was there. Geez...

I'll tell ya, that concert was just like the album but better! No big long loose jams, just the goods.

Yes, you can see him playing that famous telecaster in "Festival Express": http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0372279/

This was discussed here and a video was posted but Youtube has taken it down recently: http://www.tdpri.com/forum/telecaster-discussion-forum/339051-since-i-got-my-tele.html#post4312662

This is generally how I feel. A lot of people write off the Grateful Dead, and Jerry as a guitar player, because of preconceptions/misconceptions about the band and the music. Too bad, but even if you don't like the music, it's hard to ignore Jerry's abilities as a guitarist and musician, and his expressiveness on the guitar. On top of that, he was one of the most thoughtful, intelligent and engaging people in rock 'n' roll (or bluegrass).
