The nut doesn’t look great, kinda like it needs the slots to be cleaned up a bit. and I’m also not too happy about the sap line running through it.
Thoughts? I’m thinking it’s 400 clams, and I should return it.

You're going to have to scrape the fingerboard to get the marks off of it, and the work isn't particularly crisp (not horrible, either). Unless it has a brand that makes it worth something, I'd expect to have to do no finishing work (other than applying finish) to a $400 neck.

Nut slots look like they're diagonal, which may not matter, but why is that necessary?

No personal opinion on the dark spots, I'd be more concerned about the straightness of the sawing that occurred when the lumber was cut.

The discoloration on the headstock alone should make this one a second.

I suspect that's a photo artefact rather than actual discolouration (you can see something similar in the last photo on the neck itself).

If the grain on the side is " open" and you could stick your fingernail in it, then I'd consider it a defect. If it's just dark...that's not a defect. Lumber is a natural material and has character.

    For $400 "acceptable" isn't acceptable.
If it was $35 from China, you got yourself a steal.
But when you pay the high level price you should get the high level product.

The discoloration on the headstock is indeed from the photo. I just dont think should have to do any finish work, or pay someone to do it, when the last neck I got from the same vendor was flawless. Which is why I paid them for a 2nd one.
