I've now tried both.... big thumbs down to both, Christies hamburgers in Bellmead, TX blows them both away.

But if i gotta, 5 Guys burger is better than In & out (not a better value), and In & Out Fries are better than most fast food fries (reminds me of the original McDonalds FF's (when they use to to use 93% beef tallow fat).

I will go back to In & Out (for fries, not a burger), in a year or two... But, I'll probably never go back to 5 Guys (I did give them 2 tries).

Megan's Burger up in the TX panhandle and Runza Burgers in Norfolk, Nebraska get an honorable mention and are better than I&O/5G, Stocky's in Norfolk, Nebraska is awesome too...

Now, if In & Out will do a double double ketchup only, I'd try one...

You can do that. I get it with just mustard and chopped chiles.

In and Out burger patties have gotten wafer thin these past few
times wifey and I have eaten there.

I don't like their fries too much, i always have to order them
well done. I don't use ketchup either, I put lemon and pepper
    on them.

The best hamburger for me was a place in Oklahoma
called Stella's. You could order a hamburger just about
any size you want. Theys good ol boys over there at Stella's.

Bad-mouthing In-n-Out is blasphemy. Are they the best burger joint in town? Of course not. Not even close. Are they the best $3-4 burger on Earth? I'd say yes. In-n-Out is good because of what they do at their price point (and, sure, perhaps there's more than a bit of California pride there).

I too have never understood the hype surrounding In-n-Out or Five Guys either.

Here in Denver it's Smashburger for a chain style place and the either Capitol City Grill or the Cherry Cricket for pubs with great burgers. I'd wager Smashburger would knock both In and Out and Five Guys out of the box.

Smashburger over Five Guys? I dunno...I'd call that one a wash. Smash is a little over-the-top with all their "HULK SMAAAAAASH" everywhere, and the prices at least around here, are in my opinion, quite high for what you get. Five Guys is at least a little cheaper, and you get fries with it.

I've never actually eaten In-and-out, but I did go to college with a couple of Californians (stuck in the middle of BFE, Michigan) couldn't **** about how great it was...but they only drank bottled water, and were always complaining how cold it was (no ****, you're 3 blocks from Lake Superior and it's ****ing February).

Speaking of the UP of Michigan, Clyde's Drive In blows Five Guys and Smashburger out of the water, and I personally would put Hardee's above FG and SB as well.

Just seeing "In n' Out" is making me drool, and it's only 6:15 AM here. LOVE their burgers!

5 Guys... meh. Also WAY over-priced.

Agreed that In n' Out isn't the best burger in the world, but it's very unique and just hits the spot for a bit over $3. Very fresh ingredients make it great.

Five Guys-best I've had from a chain, but way too expensive ($10 for a burger & fries? Yikes!!!)

In-And-Out- Had the pleasure of trying them last Christmas when I went to Arizona-had a Double Double animal style, boy that was good! Not quite as good as 5 Guys, but a lot easier on the wallet-btw, I thought the fries were good, but I wish they were thicker...

One place to avoid-Steak & Shake... burgers are no better than Mickey D's, and the fries... they're not shoestring thin, they're fishing line thin... ugh...

I've always said my drunk step-dad could fry a better burger at 3am.

Right on Boubou! Such a different burger!

I like 5 Guys, but wow are they expensive and I can't stand the fries.

I still love Harvey's, but there are less and less of them around and the fries are terrible. I remember when there was a Harvey's on every corner and the fries were hand cut behind the counter, not frozen like today. Now I order onion rings instead.

We just got an In&Out here.
Not the best burger in the world, but pretty dang good for a chain burger.
Fries are the best I've had at any fast food chain.

So many little one of a kind burger joints around that make great burgers and fries.
My hometown of Lamesa, Tx. favorite is this one.

ok i have heard of five guys and in n out...but the other i have not...are they chains? because if not you cant compare them to a chain...because the hamburger place that isnt a fast food joint will always be better...when comparing chains compare chains...when comparing a hamburger joint that not a chain to another one but never mix the two

no in n out here...ive eaten 5 guys and i like it over bk and mcdonalds

Mom and Dad's burgers are the best IMO.

Dad made them on the grill using our own livestock meat while mom used veggies from the garden.
