Are there any in ear monitors or buds that sound as good as over the ear headphones?

    I love my Shure se215s.
If you want to spend more for dual or triple drivers, Shure also offers those, but I also love the $99 price point on the 215s.

    +1 on the Shure se215

Curious - what monitor system are you using? I stumbled upon a line of products from Rolls which has served our band well for personal monitoring - combining mic, instrument and board mix under individual control...

That's a tough call and would be hard to determine. If you buy custom ear molds then yeah, I think those would block out enough outside noise as headphones. Finding the right set of off the shelf ear buds, that fit your ear canal just right, should get you to the point where you're not going to hear a difference.

I freed myself from them and love it....it really makes us listen to each other in total real sound. No one in our band uses earbuds...I do have a small Kustom personal monitor on a mic stand with just vocals.

I found it to be the opposite. When we went to iems, we all started paying even more attention to the whole mix, not just whether we could each hear ourself.

I have a clear set. Work great for me. I'm too deaf to appreciate whatever an extra set or two of drivers will bring to the table. PLUS, they offer a good level of protection from further loss as long as you don't blast them.

Actually what I intended to communicate (apparently poorly)we all pay more attention to the whole mix and stage mix.
