If it has judges, it's not a sport

If it depends on a judge's score, it's not a sport. It might be a completely worthwhile thing, wonderful to watch, but if a judge is holding up a score, it's not a sport.

...go back and correct your spelling and thinking. Scoring in MMA combat, tennis, and other modern sports is not changed because you don't like it. You are not in charge.

If I had to take a guess, the OP is talking about figure skating or snowboard trick competitions.

Sport: 1An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.

Words have meanings. Just because I don't like a sport or it doesn't match up to what you think a sport should be doesn't change that. And how winners are determined isn't included in that definition.

All sports have judges. The individual sports may call them umpires, referees, or tour officials, but the outcome still hinges largely on the opinions of these judges.

I am wondering, Max, if you would watch a football or baseball game that had no officials to maintain some organization and there were no ‘rewards’ for crossing certain lines or running around the bases. It is hard to have a competition without keeping score, ime.

No all judging determines the score by assessment of skill and/or execution. A ball is in or it is out (not an opinion of how it was in or out), and you may need a judge for final ruling.

I think there should be a ball involved to call it a sport. Judging is OK, but I'd call dancing a competition, like racing is simply a race.

Boxing is clearly not a sport.

So, is sex a sport? There is a usually a ball involved. (two, in fact) While there may not be an impartial judge involved, there is scoring....;)

Oh c'mon Wally, haven't you ever seen how helpful the football players are in a game? They always point out when a catch was good or bad. Sometimes they even try to point out bad calls to the ref, but unthinking louts they are, the refs usually ignore them just because they're selfish and don't want to listen to reason.

    And golf...

The "game" of golf certainly changed when Tiger ,with his great skill , also turned heads with how fit/conditioned he was.

And yet today ? Fat asses still win tournaments.

    Golf is billiards on grass...

It would appear that you need to better articulate your point so that people understand what you are talking about. I'm guessing that you're not talking about hockey, baseball, downhill skiing, high jump, rugby, golf, or the 100 meter sprint. Instead, you're complaining about activities that are judged for artistic merit or have a "degree of difficulty" component.

Sure they do. They just don't have fixed meanings, or else we would not need dictionaries, and all dictionaries would have the same definitions, and there would be no legal profession debating the weaning of terms.
