I teach myself to play stupid old songs on guitars.

    ....but I like them.

Today, I was self-learning a fingerstyle instrumental version of......'Sweet Betsy From Pike', while last week it was 'Oh My Darling Clementine'. Only two chords in that whole Clementine thing.

I can't resist lyrics like this...

    'Ruby lips, above the water,
    blowing bubbles soft and fine,
    but alas, I weren't a swimmer,
    thus I lost my Clementine'.

That's gold right there, gold I tell you!

I'm a bit concerned, however, that I may have started down a dark path-of-no-return with this stuff. I mean.....is there a four string banjo and a straw hat in my near future? Maybe a mustache and those goofy-ass round-framed spectacles?

It's called folk and I should learn a lot of that old stuff. Burl Ives did a lot of that. With a velvet voice, I might add.

    Nothing wrong with that John.
My 6th grade music teacher taught me finger picking to a bunch of folk songs.
I still use that nonsense in a lot of formats.

The melodies are straightforward and obvious. Great for ear training and practicing fingerpicking.

"Dream a Little Dream of Me" is a song from the twenties that I play.

    It's still a "panty dropper."

My Dad belonged to the RCA Record Club every now and then he would let my brother or myself pick a record. I always chose a Homer and Jethro LP.

    "Down in the alley
    In back of a bar
    at Honest John's Car Lot
    I bought my first car"

Just one fine example still stuck in my head

When my dad was alive, he would plink out old melodies like that while I tried to accompany him...the best were him playing harmonica while I played the guitar...mostly old fiddle tunes...great memories

Try that Clementine thing with a tube screamer. Could be a hit.

I got a banjo and used those songs to learn to play it.... I find that those songs are 'gold' and that if people here me playing and singing them... they jump in and sing along...

Oh no we’ve lost John... the only question now is, banjo or accordion?

Yikes, I sense a change in John's guitar designs. Resist John, resist.

Wife gave me strict orders on the 'banjo thing' many years ago..."can't have!", but I did sneak in an old accordian some years ago, not to play, I just like to stare at all that pretty swirly plastic the damn things wear....never mind the Indian patch, it was a running joke on another forum....

Not likely, I have enough trouble 'selling' crazy guitars....but lap steels and mandolins are a possibility.

I've been trying to develop a decent instrumental version of 'Ghost Riders In The Sky' on and off for years. I only play in an open tonight anymore, and although it shouldn't be all that difficult, I just can't get parts of it, same deal with 'Sleepwalk'. Part of the problem is just not sitting down and diving into them until I get them hammered out.
