I cant really divulge anything, but I work in Hollywood, and funny this topic came up. Currently an exact replica of CBGB's is being built on stage. cb.jpg

    HERESY ALERT! BLASPHEMY ALERT!
    HERESY ALERT! BLASPHEMY ALERT!

CBGB's was actually far from the best club in NYC.

Yup, the legend of CBGBS is far better than the actual club. Hell, I never went to Studio 54, but I am sure that club was far wilder and one was sure to have a better night there than at CBGB's.

Now as far as music (not disco) clubs go, the following New York City clubs blew CBGB's off the map:

    - Danceteria
    - The Ritz
    - Roseland
    - The Funhouse

Those were actually far better (and far more influential) than CBGB's ever was. Believe it, if you went to one of those clubs I just listed:
    A) you heard the greatest music ever,
    B) you had the time of your life,
    C) decades later you still lie awake with a smile on your face, smiling at the memories of those clubs and those days.

Burlington has a great music scene. You probably won't get rich, but will have fun doing it.

I've been to The Ritz, Roseland and probably the others you mentioned. I also remember The Academy was cool. Yes, there were much "better" venues than CBGBs. Venues where you could pee in a cleaner restroom. For me, I loved the punk rock spirit of the place. It was cool playing on the same stage were the Ramones, Blondie, Talking Heads and other greats stood. We had fun there. The place was rich in history, but also rich in the stench of cigarette smoke and urine. ;)

I might have misremembered. Originally from Detriot. But I remember , thinking while watching the documentary, that they should have got a VW bus and headed down 95 to CBGBs.... The Fl. guys are different; strangely w not as good tans.

I have noticed, I think anyhow, the Academy of Music aka Palladium hasn't been mentioned. I worked there for some time, beaucoup good groups. No bar but plenty of wine skins. No smoking, right.

There were several OBIs on the Island. I saw Billy Joel at OBI West, which was near Oceanside, LI, the closest to Queens.

But I don't recall they had already famous acts, but I could be wrong.

    Yep.

I mentioned Blondie above, and remember that The Ramones were like a fixture there.

And I remember the Uncle Floyd episode with The Ramones!

i mentioned a club that had a slide. Could that have been The Funhouse?

    And is Roseland gone?

But aside from Roseland, were those clubs known for live music? As I recall, they were just dance clubs.

CBGBs was an actual live venue. But you're right:

Everything I saw, it looked like a toilet.

Yes, Roseland closed a couple years ago. Another cool place that still around, but my band never played there is Irving Plaza. Been to many shows there.
