I just bought a set of WCR Humbuckers that come stock with Akinico 5 magnets. The seller told me this set comes with a optional pair of Alinico 2 magnets. How will the Alinco2's change the tone of the pickup? Any and all information is welcome! Are the 5's hotter? more output? Thanks!!

not sure which WCR set you got or how they were voiced. Gibson '57 Classics have alnico II magnets and Duncan '59's have alnico V magnets if that is any help at all.

  3. An alnico II will have more lower midrange ,spongier softer bass & less treble than the A5
so the A2 will have a thicker creamier tone ,not as scooped or harsh as the A5
This is just a basic comparison of the two different alnico magnets
Degaussed magnets will have a little different results

Good description, I'd add sweeter tone. Spongy sounds negative, maybe "relaxed", tho if you love bass we'll go w spongy.

Not much I can add to the good descriptions already given, but here is my 2 cents anyway.
Alnico V have more output, tighter bass, more highs, less mids. Snap and snarl.
Although both "spongy" and "relaxed" can be said about Alnico II, I prefer to call it a softer attack. More mids and rounded highs. Sweet and singing.

Although there is a lot more to how a pickup sounds, swapping magnets in a Humbucker will change it's character, and is one of the means to fine tune your sound.

Tnks alot for the Info! I've never taken Tone tasting to this extreme before but what th Hey? The Pickups are a Darkburst bridge/crossroads neck Combo set. I will be putting them in a 76' Bicentennial Gibson Firebird that was routed out for Humbuckers. I didn't do the routing but its part of the reason I was able to get it so cheap. Basically what I'm getting from you is that the 5's ae a bit more modern? From your descriptions it sounds like the 2's may be the ticket. I like a more laid back rounded tone. From the WCR website it doesn't sound like its too hard to change out so I'll just experiment. Thanks!

Anybody ever Mix magnets? I decided to try it. I left the Bridge A5 alone with the hotter pickup and changed the neck to the A2. Can't hear it though because the SOB who sold me the pick ups didn't include the hardware when he sent it. So I can't mount it.

But has anyone ever tried mixing them?

    Yes.
Though I'm no expert I have tried different magnets in my Les Paul. I prefer rough cast, and ended up with A4's in both. Good results with A3 in the neck and unoriented A5 in the bridge too. Results depend on the wind of course.

Although it doesn't solve every need for change in voice it is at least cheaper than buying new pickups ;)
Just be cautious not to damage the tiny leads in the pickups.

A good source for tips on magnet swapping is the Seymour Duncan forum.
I bought my magnets at Addiction-FX on e-bay.

Cool. These are WCR's. They seem to be made for swapping. Couldn't have been easier and his magnets are all labeled as to North and what direction to place them in. Really Really simple. Looking forward to hearing them today.
