Hey all, bought a JV Squier Precision back in 1982, still play it today, good as new. Recently picked up a CV Tele and having played a few Teles over the years I've been amazed at the build quality and sound for the money. Reminded me of that moment back in '82. Could I be brave enough to say the CV is the new JV?

Thanks for that, my Afrikaans is bit limited but I get by...Mrs.Steve is Afrikaans so I understand when I'm in trouble....(almost continually). I'm one of England's exports, been here six years and still alive, it's a record.

    Welcome StevieSteve

    Where are you in SA?

I spent some time in Johanesburg and really enjoyed it.

I'd love to go back and get a real flavour for the country.

    :) Peter

Northern Jo'Burg....the last thing you want to do is get that real flavour, it's an acquired taste and presents rather like cyanide :D

Ha ha! I didn't seem that bad.

The company I worked for had offices in Sandton and I ended up staying at a place called the Bakubung for a "conference" on a regular bais. Best conference I ever went to. Oh the dot.com days!

The flights out of Jo'Burg always scared me. Being so high above sea level, the long run to get in the air always had me grabbing my seat! :D

    :) Peter

Yeah, know what you mean about flying, scares the bejessus out of me every time. Can't say I've heard of Bakubung...sounds like some kind of Japanese porn :D Sandton I know well, home to the rich, famous and a whole bunch of wannabes.

You could be brave and say that...

I have a SQ 70's RI strat and its one of my favorites. I still think the old Squiers are far and above the CV but they are very nice for the money.

    Welcome Stevie.

I've always been curious about country music as it may be adopted in non-U.S. countries. Can you suggest a link or two on YouTube showing any examples coming out of S.A.?

Welcome Stevie, I just got back from 2 wonderful weeks in Cape Town (the wife is from there and we go every year).

And yah, the CV Tele was a revelation to me too.

You're going to like it here.

Your car must be crap on wheels! ;)

I was in Stilfontein, Transvaal and up in Tsumeb, Namibia.

Can't honestly say I'd want to be there now...then again you wouldn't want to be here, it's bloody freezing!!

Thanks for all the kind words and yes my car looks like crap, although an '87 double cab HiLux does tend to win any fights the taxi drivers pick with me. In response to the comment above reagrding country music, I honestly don't know of anything that I'd recommend. You could google Lance James....I played an impromptu gig for him in 2010, didn't have any choice, he hijacked me and my pal to be his sidemen for a few numbers. It was awful and I feel scarred forever and now I have to live with the shame. There's some band here of three or four strat players who play some cat-strangling 'country' ( that's South African chicken pickin')with metal finger picks. It's all very weird.

You're right, they're not the same but in terms of what they've done I think the 'sentiment' is the same. I saw that 'Squier' band way back then and bought my Precision on the back of it. Back when the Tele was first released it was a cheap guitar for jobbing musicians, it ain't that now. Squiers for me have that mojo and appeals to cheapskates like me. It is great to see the Chinese turn out some quality, I learnt long ago that the nationality of the hand that makes something is meaningless. It is what it is?

We're dragging ourselves almost in the 20th century eh? I did a gig in Benoni once, it was terrible :(
