How to prevent cracking lacquer?

    I've had to sand the tuner bushing holes as lacquer had filled the hole a little but I've cracked my finish and also chipped it. I wrapped 400 grit sand paper into a little pencil shape and gently sanded the edges of the tuner holes.

    Is there a way to do this without chipping and cracking the finish?

    Also I've not wet sanded/buffed the finish yet.

    I was using rattle canned nitro lacquer

    I'd imagine the old backwards drilling followed by a tiny amount of counter sinking might work? Actually, maybe not the counter sinking. Anyway, watch this to see what I mean:
