A big IF I decide to do this, but if I get chicken heads for my Thinline...

They're gonna be set-screw. so is there a preferred way to position them, or is it strictly a personal thing? Like staring at the guitar front (not holding it) where would the pointers point at (12 o clock., etc.) with the knobs zeroed out?

I'm thinking that at mid-level (5), they would be at 12, but I have no idea.

The rotational position when set to full volume has special meaning known only to 3rd degree Masons, so please be very, very careful to get this right. Everyone is going to be watching your every step now that you've publicly announced your intention.

I'm not sure if it's factory, or just what I do, but I always have my Gretsch "arrow" engraved knobs pointing slightly UP and toward the headstock, when on zero.

But chicken head knobs not being nearly as cool as Gretsch knobs... I have no idea. I'm sure it's important, though. Tone-critical, as they say.

The dimed or max setting is the reference setting since you will be backing off from that spot for volume or tone adjustments. It varies with the player's preference.

On a Tele. I would point them both in the direction of the switch, parallel to the control plate. That way it only takes a quick glance to see how far you have set them from "10".

Oh yeah, meant that position on my Gretsch knobs. Not zero.

This is confusing, because that seems more difficult to me to see the reference point than using 12 o clock as the midway.

This is why I love TDPRI:

My wife is hocking me about an electrical bill we have to pay, and I'm more concerned about this.

The Land of Enablers, that's what this place is.

    Like so ?
Volume here is wide open and tone at about 3 I'd say.

You can't tell unless you know how those were screwed on.

I think I'm gonna zero them at 7, and I just realized how stupid this thread is:

It only takes a second to change it anyway.

If looking at the guitar on a stand, I set the max at about 4 o'clock. This puts the minimum at exactly 6 o'clock.

This only works if the chicken head knobs are from the fifties and have a slotted screw driver set screw. No allens allowed.

If they are from the 40s and salvaged from the Manhattan Project or early fifties from Raytheon's accidental chocolate bar melt lab. Then Allens would be OK.

    Otherwise stick to Oem knobs.

Depends how often you pick like that...

I'd stick with perfectly round, concentric knobs - much easier to roll the volume off using your palm.

Chicken pointers would only be another meaningless thing to obsess about.

These chicken knobs would solve your dilemma...
    You’re welcome, no thanks necessary.

    How about this.

Set them so they are pointing straight down at full volume. That way, when you can just swipe forward (back to front on the bottom of the beak) to lower the volume after a solo or knock the beak straight down to pop them to full volume.

...and paint them red. That's makes them faster and louder... Definitely red...

    Kmart underwear sucks.

If they were red, wouldn't they be 'roosters'?

(I'd also second having them pointing straight down at full tilt)
