Newbie question here... if I’m using a Telecaster pickup that screws into the body, how do I align it properly so that the pickguard winds up in the correct place?

    Thanks!

put a big blob of blue tac putty in the pocket, put your guard back on with the pickup in it, get it all in the right place, press the pu into the putty to hold it square, take the guard off and mark the drill holes through the pu base,,,, screw it in and adjust it for playing height before you put the guard back on, job done,,,:)

    good luck..:)

I used the method @trev333 described and it worked out great for me. I'd try to make sure the pickup looks level after you've pushed it into the putty as well, pickups that lean to the front or back look bad.

careful you don't drill through the back of the guitar, too..;)

I like to do it with the neck in the pocket... so the pick guard doesn't encroach the pocket area...

I drilled holes in a pickguard for a pickguard mounted pickup. Then I used the mounting screw holes as a guide as to where to drill down into the body.

whatever method ya do use ... mount the bridge first... that way you can get the pickguard correctly (visually) aligned with the edge of the guitar, the control rout and the bridge.. then press the pup into the putty.. that way, no surprises when ya go to mount the other hardware.... and it all comes out looking like someone that could see did it..
