    Hey all,

I've got this crazy idea to turn my HRD into a head. Anybody ever done it? How does it work with that funky chassis? (top mounted knobs) My idea is just to saw the thing in half and stick the bottom back on it. My main concern is that I've heard trannies and reverb tanks don't get along well if they are too close together. Thoughts?

    Hmmmm....nah!

First of all it's yours do with it what you want....but ..... the HRD is already a very portable amp and I can't see any point in doing this. You should build another cabinet for a head and transfer the guts and keep the original so that you can put it back together in the future. My wild guess is down the road, if you actually hacked the original cab. you will be saying "what was I thinking", especially if you ever want to sell it.
I've seen a few chopped cabs over the years and I shake my head every time I see an original chopped, whether it is a "good" amp or some low value amp. It greatly reduces the value.

    I get what your saying...

And I did think about that. My issue with the amp is, I would love to be able to plug it into a closed back 4X12, without having to carry a 4X12 box AND a full sized combo. I could carry then both, I have the room, but it doesn't seem as practical as just using a head. I just wish Fender made a HRD head, it would make my life alot easier. 8)

Those issues aside, if I go ahead with this, what do I need to watch out for as far as the tranny and reverb tank interacting? I have no idea what supposedly happens when they get too close together, i've just heard it can be bad.

    Check this out

    Unofficial Hot Rod Deluxe page

Look about 3/4 of the way down the page.

I think it's way cool, I sit and ponder the idea once in awhile.
