I picked up this old Apollo bass (made by Greco and sold by St. Louis Music IIRC) today at a pawn shop for $25. No case and it needs a new nut and has missing knobs and pickguard but it sounds pretty cool.

Anyone know anything about these and/or where to get said pickguard?

    Thanks!

You might have to have a pickguard made for that. Most any knobs should do, but new pots might be in order. There could be a good bass lurking there. And for $25? What's not to like?

Yeah I've read the pickups in these are supposed to be really good - better than the average stuff from this era. I have some Vox knobs that look like the originals I'll probably use. I'm thinking I'll take the bracket off and if someday I come across a pg I'll stick it on.

Need to get a set of Deep Talkin flats.

Anytime you can find a killer deal like that on a bass or electric at a pawnshop, you've done good.

Hope you get it in good playing condition.

My brother had an Apollo violin bass that was better than a Hofner. IMHO. Or something like that...

Go over the whole thing with Naptha or lighter fluid, which is Naptha... It'll get all that DNA off of there and it won't mess to finish up one iota.

And I just learned that like three months ago, I used to use all kinds of stuff.

    .

    Nice find!

I'd leave the pickups but strip out the whole electronic set (keep as much together as possible) then rewire with all new Bourns/Switchcraft/etc top of the line controls. It will feel great, last, and sound awesome.
