Depends much on individual components, pups, switches, pots...

An HH can definitely rock though. One of my builds with built for a heavy rocker with a a set of Bill Lawrence 500XLs and a 5-way.[IMG]

I have a G&L HH. Sounds a lot like a Les Paul to me.

    .

Here is what you seek to know:
-Same pickups plus pots and caps equal same output tone (scale and everything else does not matter).
-Ergonomics of bridge location relative to thigh cut and strap buttons plus the bridge saddle style will determine where you pick and thus your tone. You can choose to pick in different locations and copy the tone.

Anything else like wood, body shapes, and on and on are so small an impact (even though people say 'I can hear a difference!') that it doesn't matter on stage or recordings.

If you are curious about testing it out, get a $30 used Strat-like-object with a swimming pool route, and make up a bunch of loaded pickguards with all the classic pickups and matching controls: Strat, Tele, LP, SG, PRS, Gretsch, etc etc. Swap those on that SLO and wail away. You'll find the classic tones match the loaded pickguard.

Then you might also find that swapping pots and caps can push the pickup tones around (they are a system).

Of course, there are players that can rig up a rope on a cow bell and play Mozart.

Beyond the scale length, the other thing making that guitar and an LP different is the wiring scheme. By running separate volume and tone controls for each pickup, you get a much larger amount of tonal versatility in the middle position. You can't do that with a typical Tele layout, though you can if you either go with concentric pots or a 72 Deluxe.

I have a Player Series Tele HH. I replaced my EPI Les Paul with it. The player HBs sound awesome, and it sooo much more comfortable to play!

I wired a control harness in strat HH configuration, such that it has 1 vol and 2 tones. Tele 3 way switch. Diagram on the SD site. Tight, but works great.
Found a three hole tele control plate, online.
So, you can have almost LP like control, certainly strat control over tone, while playing a tele.

[the white tele has a strat pickup in the neck, Fender '52 in the bridge, and a piezo acoustic pickup in the saddle. The magnet and piezo pickups are wired to a stereo output jack]
