This is one of my favorite Larry Carlton songs and I finally sat down and tabbed the whole thing out. It took forever but doing it was a great way to really dig deep into his playing to study his phrasing.

    Here's the tab: Don_t Give it Up.pdf

And this is my attempt at playing it. This was my first time using Reason Record. The guitar part is my Anderson strat through a Line6 POD.

I split it into 2 parts

    Part A: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=1092805&songID=9967072

    Part B: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=1092805&songID=9967071

And here's the master himself. (sorry, I'm not sure how to embed videos here)

WOW, great job. I wish I could get a guitar pro or power tab of this.

    Thanks Gerard

I'm not too familiar with those...how are they different?

I could remove my guitar and post a backing track if that would help. I could probably post a slowed down version of the lead too.

    Thanks!

And you're very welcome! I think I'm going transcribe some more of his stuff. His phrasing is just so damn good.

Let me know if you're able to follow the tab ok.

Guitar Pro and Powertab are computer generated tab editing programs. If the tab was in text rather than PDF, I could try to import it into Guitar Pro. But thanks for posting. I've been a big fan of Larry Carlton ever since I started playing guitar. He has a great course on Truefire.com.

    Hey Gerard

I use Notation Progression which I'm not too happy with. There are many simple things it just won't let me do. I think the next step up is Sibelius but it's just so expensive.

Yeah, I've seen the stuff on Truefire and I'm really tempted. I also saw that they posted a snippet of 'Don't Give It Up' but it's just the intro and it's not a real transcription. I emailed truefire to see if they might be interested in my version but I haven't heard back from them. :)

I know what I'm working on this weekend...

I'd like to suggest B.P. Blues for your next project.

I'll take that into consideration :)

If you're interested I could probably remove the guitar from my recording so you have a backing track.

Progression should be able to export to MusicXML, and Guitar Pro/Powertab should have MusicXML import capabilities.

In any case, Sibelius is tough to beat, although it has some funny quirks, like notating double-stops with one bend is hacky.

I highly recommend Larry Carlton courses in Truefire. He explains a bunch of his techniques. Some of his work with Steely Dan and a lot of blues guitar work. I also found this little snippet:

    Oh man

I wish I had seen this earlier! I don't think I got the fingering right. (sigh)
Kid Charlemagne's one of my all-time favorite solos. He's such a great player.

    Thanks Gerard

I just found this forum on Google searching for a Don't give it up tab.
Fist off hats off to ADinNYC for doing such a great job! I enjoyed hearing your 2 tracks as much as the original.
I 've been trying to open your pdf though without any success. Is there another way I might be able to open it please?
    CHEERS!

Thanks to B8704 for reviving this one!

ADinNYC - Can I be a pain and ask for a copy of the tab as well?

I'd forgotten how great that song is and enjoyed how beautifully you transcribed and played it.

    cheers
