What is this, and where do I get one?
Is it really as cool as it looks?
An old Kay, maybe? Yeah, they're kinda "thunky" and very cool. Sheryl Crowe uses these, other people as well.
A little more googling and I think it might be a Harmony H22 with the pickguard removed.
My first guess was gonna be vintage Kay, Harmony or Silvertone also. Just has that "look" to it.
After that I was gonna guess Framus or '60s Japanese.
<no fight with nojazzhere> Sheryl Crow plays a Guild M85 bass (I used to play one but it weights a ton) which is similar, but not the one discussed here.
I'm thinking its a Harmony H22 that's been rebuilt. It's got the single cutaway body and exact knob layout of the H22 along with the appropriate single gold foil pickup. The things that are different could have been changed by an experienced luthier. The pickguard could have been removed and the guitar refinished in black. The trapeze tailpiece is non original but could also have been added later.
H22's are great sounding basses. Think Spencer Davis Group with Gimme Some Lovin' or Ronnie Lane with Small Faces (Itchycoo Park etc).
Here's what those old Harmony basses can sound like!
Thanks for the Video with Tal, great bass talent and sings well too!
Yes - she's quite special, isn't she!
Yes that looks like a harmony. I recently built a hollow body bass like that, aiming for the same vibe

Nice bass build. I like the hollow body approach.
I bet that bass is a blast to play.
