And anyway, you don't need to know any songs in open G, just break out yer slide and let fly. Is there anyone else who finds that this is the magic tuning?

    Ok . . . I'm going to be a little pedantic here -

In a guitar mag interview Jimmy Page gave the tuning he used for "Levee" as being :
C F A C (bottom 4 strings only). I cover this song pretty often and use his tuning but dropped a semi-tone (for my vocal range). I tune the top 2 strings in unison.
    So, that's: - E E B E G# B
    Try it, it's spot on.

    Another Zep song in open G though - Bron-Y-Aur Stomp - it's a blast !
ooh, and another - That's the way.

Agreed. I find that even a hacker like myself can sound ok messing around in that tuning. Recently fractured a ring finger on a guy's mirror that rode into my lane while I was on my motorcycle. Was bummed that I wouldn't be able to play for a while. Open G saved the day, especially when using the aluminum splint for slide.

Big fun. Open G has resulted in a whole bunch of "Ah ha!" moments for me.

Arlen's got a killer version of "A Change is Gonna Come" on slide in open G (up to A), and Tele on his first album...he's got what sounds like a lot of open G stuff all over his records!

I'm pretty sure "Friends" by Zep is open G also.

I've always wondered - is "Stay With Me" by Faces in open G?

    Nice thread bump.

I just got a new Muddy Waters tele and I was gona leave it in an open tuning and finally get around to learning slide, after oh 30 years or so. But I couldn't decide which open tuning.. Sounds like G is the way to go.

I dunno what tuning it was recorded in, but I love playing "Squeeze Box" by the Who in open G.

For something a little heavier, Buckcherry's "Lit Up" is in open G and The Cult's "Love Removal Machine" can be played in Open G (sounds a lot like Start me Up). I also play Pearl Jam's "Evenflow" in Open G with a capo on 2.

One of the greatest recordings of all time, Mississippi John Hurt's "Frankie" which
he fingerpicks. Great lyrics, really telss the story in the best American folk tradition.
Should have been covered a long time ago.

I fingerpick all sorts of instrumental songs in open tunings, mostly 'G' (I suppose), in fact, I have played guitar in only open tunings for the past eight or ten years or so.

Here's a few of them I play that I think sound pretty good fingerpicked in open 'G'...as instrumentals that is....

    Daydream Believer
    The Tennessee Waltz
    Your cheating heart
    Amazing grace
    Happy trails
    Over the rainbow
    Ashoken Farewell
    Generic guitar blues
    The cruel war
    Shenandoah
    Michael row the boat ashore
    Streets of Laredo
    Wildwood flower

More like campfire songs than rock standards, but somebody's gotta do them.

This was played in an open tuning, maybe 'G', maybe 'sorta G'...don't remember now...can't embed for some reason, so here's a link to it...

Tip: tune both the E and A string to G, otherwise you'll never nail it.

About the only tuning I play in for the past ten years is open G (or A), it's great for fingerstyle instrumental versions of The Tennessee Waltz, Your cheating Heart, Over The Rainbow, Daydream Believer, and of course, all sorts of bluesy things.

Wow, that was quite the thread revival...

I'm going to suggest Big Sugar. Gordie Johnson once said he "dreams in Open G". Tunes like "Diggin' a Hole", "If I Had My Way", "All Hell For a Basement", "Nicotina", etc. Not sure they were all originally done in Open G, but I'd bet good money he plays them that way these days.

"Just Came Back" by Colin James is another good one (can you tell I'm Canadian yet?).
