Randy Buckner, of Springfield, Missouri, has just released a new CD of thumb-picked songs in the style of Merle Travis. Randy and Merle's son Thom Bresh have hosted a thumbpicking workshop each May in Mountain View, Arkansas. I believe that Randy has reproduced Merle's style almost perfectly.

The new CD is called "Thumbin' the Strings."

One finger and the thumb and a lazy distinction of the bass notes. That is authentic Merle :)... love it!

Thom Bresh does a great job of that as well (obviously) but most often he plays more like Chet, with all fingers and a distinct root/five bass line.

Randy can play like Chet or Jerry Reed or Herb Ellis, but he when he plays like Merle, he reproduces Merle's nuances. Thom Bresh would agree with your assessment.
