So I ordered a couple replacement nuts for my #Telecaster - the original on top and the replacements underneath, which appear to taller. So is this the wrong nuts sent by #Stewmac, or is common, when replacing the nut, to have to file them down? telecaster nuts.jpg

    .

Common to file. You have to fit them to your guitar and file the slots to match.

A guy walks into a bar with a steering wheel down the front of his pants.

The barman says, "Hey, what's with the steering wheel?"

The guy replies, "It's driving me nuts."

About the only thing ready to go on a premade nut is the slot location, and that's if it is right for your neck width. The only way you can get the correct slot depth without nut tools is to trim off the bottom for your fret height and preference.

Just lay the old nut on top of the new one and draw a line across the bottom edge of the old nut. Sandpaper and file to remove the material and your done.

Thanks for the answers and encouragement. I used a round file and completed my first “nut job” and my number one is back on the rack.

ONLY IF.... only if the slots depth is identical.
