It seems a very popular opinion to hate on Phil Collins these days, but even if you hate his voice, I don't know how anyone could deny he's a fantastic drummer (or was, sad that his body can't handle it any more).

Yep, he's a killer drummer, check him out with Brand X. I can remember a lot of hatred towards Collins in the 80's. Doesn't seem to be anything new. From everything I've heard, he's not exactly a pleasant fellow, so maybe it is well earned. Could be wrong.

Though it was controversial “in the day”, Phil Collins’ replacement of Peter Gabriel as front man with Genesis brought them much greater commercial success.

I'm a big Nils Lofgren fan and was happy to hear that he had replaced Little Steven during his brief departure. Even happier to hear that he remained with the band after Steven's return. Too bad he can't do back flips anymore.

I also think John Mayer has done a great job with Dead & Co.

King Crimson have been through so many lineup changes... the two I would highlight for the purposes of this thread are
    1) Boz Burrell replaces Gordon Haskell on bass & vocals, and Ian Wallace replaces Andy McCulloch on drums going from the Lizard lineup to the Islands lineup. I think both albums are excellent (Lizard sadly underrated) but the Islands lineup is just a great step up, and there are some great recordings of them playing live.
    2) ironically enough Fripp’s firing of Wallace, Boz and Mel Collins from that very successful Islands lineup — and the creation of the truly classic Larks’ Tongues In Aspic lineup with their replacement by Bill Bruford, John Wetton, David Cross and Jamie Muir. An awesome band which made three of the greatest albums in progressive rock history (as they dwindled from a 5- to a 4-piece to a trio) and played some massive live performances.

(I don’t think the creation of the Bruford / Levin / Belew lineup in the 1980s counts as there was a long hiatus and they got together initially under the name Discipline rather than KC.)

Yeah but Ronnie was busy at that time.

Would the Stones have done those albums if Brian Jones had cleaned up enough to stay in the band?

Brian Johnson replaced Bon Scott, and acey deecey released back in black shortly thereafter, which... Who can argue that back in black isn't amazing?

I love the pre-Perry albums. Pretty much like two different bands though, but I think people always say Perry and undersell what a big difference Jonathan Cain made with the pop influences in his writing style.

Scott replaced Dave Evans and was much better. Johnson replaces Bon Scott and the success continued. Brian Johnson gets replaced by Axl Rose. Ummmm...

Plant had all kinds of guitarists before he got to those guys. Robbie Blunt replaced Jimmy Page. Liam Tyson actually replaced Porl Thompson in Strange Sensations.

Hot Rize's choice of Bryan Sutton to replace Charles Sawtelle after he passed away couldn't have been better.

There were early Genesis fans who thought the band should've just folded when Gabriel left.....I think it helped that Collins was already part of the band. While their voices weren't exactly alike, their vocal "inflections" were similar, and Phil sang much of the older material in Gabriel's "style".
I never saw Genesis WITH Peter Gabriel, but did see them here in Ft Worth on their first tour after he left. Phil played nearly half the show behind the drums, with Bill Bruford as second "percussionist". Steve Hackett in a puffy-sleeved shirt and knee-high riding boots.....seated the entire show. ;)
