$12,000 can get you a new D-28 and a VW Jetta with 24,000'miles that just came off of a 2 year lease.

    I mean, damn.

    12 stones! Damn.

No, but you can pay a little less and order the guitar without his signature from the Martin. You can probably buy a D-45 for between $5000 and $8000 - not all that bad an investment.

John's a great guy and a good player (we lived on the same floor in college) and I think it's great he's getting some recognition.

It's a limited edition guitar aimed at a particular demographic. I have a D-41 and a couple older Brazilian Martin guitars and won't be buying one, although it's probably a killer guitar.

If it were $1000 people would probably be lining up to buy them like they were with the Paisley Tele, which IMHO is a much sillier guitar.

I've got to hand it to the guy...every guitar company is just dying to be represented by him.

I almost never play acoustic, so even if I ever dreamed of paying that much for a guitar, it wouldn't be that one.

I just clicked on the link and it says no longer available - so I presume someone's stumped up the cash.

My issues with that price are.

    1 I'd never pay it.
2 I don't like the fake aged look.
3 I don't think many deserve a signature instrument except the maker.
4 For a Martin I hope it's some sort of true custom. A bunch or group of high end Martins in a shop never have that consistent super responsive nature and wow factor the way a bunch of Santa Cruz, Collings or similar have. There are superb Martins but why take the risk at that price point.

In my experience, Custom Shop Martins tend to be very, very good instruments.

If I had the scratch, I would buy a D-45 Authentic in the wink of an eye.

    Because I could

    Or something like that

An authentic replica that had a truss rod would interest me unlike the expensive signature models.

My Martin turnoff are the ones with toner to look old. The 000-28EC has that fake color and is priced much like offerings from great small builders. It is fairly common so I've played a fair sample size. Few are exceptionally responsive like the Bourgeois, Collings and Santa Cruz they compete with. That's where I'd have hesitation.

I believe you're right about a Martin true customs.

A 45 is a fabulous guitar. I have 2 of the standard issue ones. An 86 and a 2010. They are a cut above most . a premium for a signature is up to the buyer. His would not appeal to me,but Chris Martin is no dummy. Those early mayers flew of the shelf. This will too.

That's cheap. I just saw one of his PRS signature Super Eagle II guitars listed on Reverb, exc condition used, for $16k. I'm a Garcia fan, and that guitar is a tad interesting to me... but not anymore.

I hate to say this because I've already posted my 41 but in general the inlay looks awesome but a regular D-28 would probably sound better because of the lack of weight on the top from the shell.

That being said, it's ok to sacrifice for fashion :)

    Probably not.

The abalone around the rim is all located above the kerfing - the stuff the holds the top/back to the rim.

There is some speculation, that on pearl-borded guitars, the top is actually less attached to the side and vibrates more readily.

    Or maybe not.
