This is my first post on the forum. I recently decided to build my own tele. I bought a cheap kit to get up to speed on electronics and the basics. My next step is a huge one... a scratch build with minimal tools. I have started with the wood and have gathered some nice prices. A great price of African mahogany and a really raw price of white ash. I am sure I will have many questions and will wear out the search.

Do you have a power saw for that ash? If it has absolutely no knots you might be able to rough it out by splitting. Is the ash going to become the neck? When you say "minimal tools" do you mean only hand tools? If so, you're going to learn how to use a sharpening stone. If I was going to make a guitar with the least tools I would never give up my plane. See those cracks in the end of the ash? They come from drying too quick and just about always go deep into the wood. Get hold of a book called Understanding Wood by Hoadly for details of how to turn trees into beautiful shapes.
Good luck, man that mahogony is making me drool.

The 914 is from another bad habit. I have restored multiple Porches, a couple were the much maligned 914. I have used that nickname for years. Thx for the kind words. I have a router, table saw and jig saw, that is minimal to me. I will hand plane some of it. The ash is a huge piece that could make 3 bodies. I have two other pieces of ash for the neck.

I plan on router planing the mahogany first. The ash needs to dry for awhile. Accept the neck pieces, they have been drying for 2.5 years.

Thx for the advice about the ash. All this wood was free, so if it is bad for a guitar I will repurpose it.

I had not gotten very far with this build. I was waiting for the weather to warm up. My first job was to make my own templates. I am starting wit a strat template the will make the tele. I started by printing plans on 8x11 paper and taping them together...very carefully. Then I bought 3/4 inch MDF and glued it to the MDF. IMG_4415.JPG

I then used a jigsaw and cut very carefully around the paper template. The I pulled out my trusty vibrating sander, clamped it down and cleaned it all up. IMG_4416.JPG

The next part was to use this template to make another for the tremolo pocket and for routing the neck pocket. IMG_4422.JPG
