I have an AV '52 and a Fender Special Edition Deluxe Ash Telecaster. Decided to convert the Fender Special Edition Deluxe Ash Telecaster to an Esquire!

The only mod to the body was I had to route out the control cavity because it came with reversed controls...

    Kept:
    - nut (may cut a bone nut for it - we'll see...)
    - frets
    - bridge
    - control plate
    - jack cover

    Adding:
    - Fender Pure Vintage Tuners
    - StewMac 3/8" conversion bushings for the tuners (perfect fit)
    - W D Music products bakelite, Esquire pick guard (perfect fit)
    - Fender Pure Vintage '52 Telecaster® Knurled Knobs
    - Fender Pure Vintage Original Telecaster® Switch Tip
    - Fender Pure Vintage Telecaster® String Guide (round string "T")

and last, but certainly not least:

    - JonseyBlues, Esquire Wiring for One Pickup Guitars
    Item# ESQUIRE1 Esquire Wiring Options 1V 1T 3 way: Esquire Cocked Wah setting 250K pots .005uf cap

    - JonesyBlues, 1950B & 1952T Blackguard Pickups
    Item# 1950B-52T-BG Choose Pickups: 1950B Bridge pickup

    It's starting to come together:

Even has a Black Cat (bag of) Bone:

    Thanks for looking...

That Bakelite guard looks VERY good on there!

I've got the same guitar, mines a 2015. I've got Custom Shop Blackguard pickups in it, and I also changed the control plate back around. I've been thinking about a Bakelite guard, vintage tuners, and a round string tree, maybe some heavy knurl knobs... well you just convinced me!

Thanks! I figured I might as well do it up! I ordered the knobs, the tree and the switch knob from Fender. I got the tuners on Amazon for $41! I think they are about $50 now...

How do you like the CS pickups?

I really like the CS Blackguards. I was thinking when I bought this that I would put a PAF style humbucker in the neck, but this pickup is the best tele neck I've ever heard, and the bridge pickup is nice too.

I wondered about those Fender logo Kluson style tuners like you have. They sure do look nice!

    Awesome on the pickups!

These tuners are the same ones that are on my AV '52 Telecaster and my AV '56 Stratocaster - I love them, very stable - these guitars stay in tune for days!!

Fender calls them, "PURE VINTAGE GUITAR TUNING MACHINES"

How are the Fender Pure Vintage knobs? Do you have them yet?

Wiring harness and pickup arrive Saturday...

Knobs and string tree arrive Monday...

Then I'll run a full setup on it and be good to go!

Your WD pickguard, are those finished? Sanded and sealed?

I don't know about sealed, the WD site doesn't say and it doesn't look as if it's sealed. It has a finish that looks "ground", for lack of a better description. It looks just like what's shown on WD's web site... Light reflections aside - it's pure black...

Pick guard installed - I reflected light on it to attempt to show the texture:

WD's web site picture - it looks just like this:

Pickup and wiring harness arrived yesterday. Installation went well, but the control harness is a tight fit.

If it performs as good as it looks, that's a spectacular guitar! Nice work.

All done! If your not familiar with the round string tree, it has slots on the underside for the strings. Note that the original string "T" tree spread the stings a little - the round tree is the perfect width for the strings...
