What are you favorite caps to use? And who's the best vendor of nos caps? Pio caps I've used in the past are the green Russian military one and luxe (kinda cool but who knows what at the core?)

Oh and I shoulda been more specific...I meant guitar caps but since I'm starting to work with tube amps lets do those too! I heard a lot of Mallory votes out there but what's better and where can you get em?!?

The vaule of the cap is probably the most important over construction.

    D. Allen claims his pickups sound better with PIO caps. Rob DiStefano uses the Rat Shack "Green Weenie" caps. Don Mare sells the old ceramic disk type on his site.

This is an on going subject here. Do a "thread search" and you will find endless info and generally no solution to your question. You will also run accross some easy ways to test caps without soldering and unsoldering.

The only true answer is to try multiple caps and make your own decision as to what you like.

Post you amp cap question in the "Shock Brother's" threads.

Ok thank you! I know everything's subjective to different variables and a whole lot of opinion that's for sure...I was mostly looking for where to locate the best nos ect caps besides eBay...I'd love to know how to test caps without soldering/desoldering!!!got the link for that thread?!?

    Let Google be your guide.

Type in "nos paper in oil capacitors for guitars" and you'll find a bunch of distributors. There were about 5 or 6 on the first page.

The way I've done the "no soldering" test for caps. Take two test leads connect the leads one to the tone pot lug and one to a good ground. Then clip the other ends of the leads to opposite sides of the cap.

One thing good about the Tele. You can still play it with the guts exposed. Or if your careful, you can reinstall the control plate with the leads hanging out if your careful.

I have discovered google... what an amazing site! Haha jk google always seems to be the answer you get when you ask a question on these thread and it shouldn't be! Saying "google it" is the most unhelpful answer you can get, that suggestion can't be taken seriously, "oh my god thank you! I would have never thought of that!" It should already be assumed that you've googled something (unless your my grandma, or live under a rock)...yeah I've googled! Im looking for people's opinions...google doesn't tell what the best sites are and why, or recommend things to you based on experience...the only thing that can do that is a human being...and I'm sorry for the sarcasm but its not directed at you because you did give me some "human" advice that was very helpful (like the part about testing the caps) but more directed at the people they say "google it" as there only answer and think that some how there helping...

I was just trying to stir the pot a little :p.

I have always just used whatever the caps were that came with the Fender pots. I never have paid attention to values, brands, construction or any other factor. I figure if its good enough for fender its good enough for me and it has always worked out well.

This guy was on the first page top of the list when googled. Sorry for the "Google".

He has some Sprauge JAN .01uf caps from 1952 for only $23.50 per cap. And a boatload of others. Why don't you try him and give us a report.

Angela, Stewmac, Mojo, Radio Shack, GFS, Musician's Friend and Guitar Center.

There's my list of people I've bought caps from.

Did I find a big or any difference in the "Green Weenie" from Radio Shack and the PIO from Angela.
They were the same value and the same position in a passive guitar circut.

    The answer is no.

the only thing that matters with caps in passive guitar circuits is value, tolerance and build. spending lotsa dollars on pio, bbees and other "boutique" *electronic active circuit* caps for guitars is a total and complete waste of money.

Every once in a while I get a customer request a 10 dollar PIO cap for there guitar and I accomodate them with whatever they want. But if they don't ask they get a ceramic cap that costs me 50 cents. And no one can tell the difference unless they look.
