Looks like mahogany body wood to me instead of ash, the neck plate and pots code out to a 1960, says it was white and owned by hank williams jr, but he decided to sand it all off and refinish it, sanding off the headstock decal in the process (convenient huh). I am awaiting pics of the neck pocket and neck markings. Here are the pics I have.

Wrong tremolo bar and pickguard. I wonder what the dates on the neck and body say.

Kind of an academic question after someone's taken a belt sander to all the finish. Oh well.

Like the red painted block and springs - wonder if that adds tone?

No extra tone...but I think it locks the tone already there inside. So it can't get away...:D

After more research, even the caps look period correct, as do the tuners, but I don't know, I don't think this is, if it turns out to be, I will buy it and end up getting it properly restored to period correct specs.

Body could be Alder which is correct. Does not look like Mahogany. Pictures are not good enough to tell. I think it could be legit. It has a lot of value just in parts.

Can you see any trace of the original paint?

What would be a good price to get it for in this condition if it's legit?

There is a '63 mahogany Strat on page 142 of "The Stratocaster Chronicles". They do exist, and they are very rare.

As it sits, I think it looks pretty cool in the pictures.

As was mentioned, bar and pickguard are wrong. The rest of it is looking pretty good from where I'm sitting.

I agree, the body is definitely NOT mahogany, although mahogany 60's strats (and teles) do exist... Looks like alder to me too.

Could be the real deal. I doubt the Hank connection, unless there is a family connection. Buying, selling, and brokering vintage back in the 90's, every guitar you came across had a story about belonging to somebody famous, especially the ones that were really messed up.

I can't prove it's a real one just from these pics. But from these pics, it certainly can't be disproved from what I can see.

Reminds of a '58 I once bought that somebody had totally sanded off and brush painted with white house paint. Yep, even the fretboard. That one restored OK for it's new owner, so I'm thinking this one definitely could be made "right" again.

The red block and springs may be an indication of a previous theft, or of stupidity. I've seen stuff like this before. If the guitar was sprayed red at some point, without the removal of these components, that's how they'd look.

We used to do that when I was a kid. Hang a guitar up, mask off the neck, pickguard, controls, and bridge, and spray it whatever color you wanted. We never would have bothered to cover up the spring cavity.

Lots of stolen guitar go this treatment too...

I made an offer contingent upon findings on the neck and neck pocket.

If there is nothing on the neck or in the neck pocket, I won't be getting it. If there is the things I want to see, I will be getting it and having it restored by an expert in fender restorations. Likely will have it relic'd as well because the fretboard is in such bad shape I'm not sure I want to risk getting it re-radiused and fretted.

I dunno, there's an awful lot of groovy there. I'd wanna see the forearm and belly contours.

It belongs to someone she is related to, and the reason why she is an ex is the reason why all the others are ex's, we just weren't compatible.
