Evidence : James Burton is a pretty good guitar player

Bunch of hacks (Gill, Skaggs, Lee, Burton) jamming at a bar the night before they play the EC Crossroads thing.

    JB is 70-ish here.

He solos at 1:51 and 5:00.

His second solo is pretty jaw-hanging right from the jump.

Obviously they're all greats but James just brings it and Albert Lee is grinning playing next to a genius/pioneer/idol who still amazes.

and then theres this to take it all the way to the top.

Saying james burton is pretty good is like saying an atomic bomb is a firecracker thats kinda loud.

If somebody woulda lent Ricky and Albert a decent Tele, plugged into a decent Twin, and dialed 1/2way in, it woulda been easier to appreciate what tasteful monsters THEY are.
As it was... Vince and James sure seemed to leave 'em in the shade.

The solo at 5:00 didn't strike me as jaw dropping, but it seemed very musical, and I'll take that over jaw dropping any day.

In fact, I'd wager we could use more of the musical over the flashy, technical playing that has become the standard.

That's what drops my jaw - that kind of musicality. Burton himself is credited with the phrase (in regards to what to play) "If in doubt - go out".

I'm an ex-prog/fusion freak. Too many notes/weedlt deedly and my brain leaves...

Burton's short solo on Merle Haggard's Lonesome Fugitive is about as musical as one can get... I just can't imagine that song without that solo.

You don't have to imagine that. Unfortunately, it exists. I think this was done in Nashville before Merle decided to go back to CA and do it his way. Just ain't the same without James. I think they chose the right one to release.

Wow...brushes with a wood block on the back beat and the Ray Conniff singers on back up vocals.

    :(

That's Albert's (now former) band Hogan's Heroes in case you're interested.
