Ever buy a pedal because your guitar hero used it?

I was horrified when John Mayer started using a Marshall Bluesbreaker. But my horror turned to happiness when the pedal I paid $30 for started going for $300.

I guess when I saw that Joe Perry, Steve Stevens, and Jeff Beck were all using Rats, back in the 80s, I knew I'd have to check one out

... which I traded for a Rat, 86 or something. And no regrets. Closer to SRV than any TS :)

While not my "hero" per se, I bought the Boss PS-5 Super Shifter to get the octave dive-bomb Dan Auerback (Black Keys) gets in Lonely Boy. Turns out, it's a sweet chorus pedal too.

I've bought guitars, amps and pedals because my favorite players used them. Some worked for me, some didin't. One of my favorites was the Zinky Master Blaster. Picked it up because Keith Richards has one in his live rig.

Marshall guv’nor ii for Pearl Jam sounds (in the rig I had then).
All the other stuff wasn’t bought with a hero in mind.

Oh wait, I did buy a FuzzNutz because the Rev Billy G used one once.

But Billy is not my hero.

And a Voodoo Lab Tremolo because I saw it in a John Fogerty rig rundown so it must be a legit trem.

But John is not my hero.

And a phaser because Dark Side of the Moon.

But Gilmour is not my hero.

And a Rangemaster clone because of Clapton.

But Clapton is not my hero.

Hmmm, who is my guitar hero?

Argh! Maybe I don't have one! Am I supposed to have a guitar hero?

I bought a CS-3 because of country players, A Tube Screamer because of SRV, A Stratocaster because of Knopfler, Clapton and Steve Miller.
A Deluxe Reverb because Tom Wheeler said it's the only amp you'll ever need to own. A Telecaster because it's a Telecaster.

    I still sound like me.

I use a DX7 because all of my various favorite artists had to sell records after 1983

I bought my first Tubescreamer because of SRV. It's gone.
I bought an early production Zendrive because of Robben Ford. It's gone.

I bought them both to emulate those artist tones. I failed.

My assertion is that there are only so many OD, Distortion and Fuzz sounds to be had regardless of pedals used for each of those purposes. Pick one of each that matches your amp, style etc and stick with it.

I have only one more pedal on my wish list but I can't say that I'll ever pull the trigger. It would be an Analogman Sun Face.
I'm done. Between what I have and my Helix, I have all the tones I can coax out of my abilities/hands.

probably because my three or four favorite players never really used them all too much.

And now I'm at the point of trying to use as few as possible. I'm in this big band now and doing gigs, aside from a good distortion box, a wah, and comp and boost... theres not much else to add. Any sort of FX is going to push me farther down in the mix.

Not yet - but there's time

Seriously, I really don't know much about who uses what pedal. I bought some just before Xmas 2017 on the basis that I'd heard flanger, chorus, delay and overdrive pedals and like how they sound. I just went by ear as to which ones I liked in the shop.

My guess is that how you play has more input on how you sound than whose pedals you use.

I bought a Fulltone Vibe, mostly because of Hendrix and Trower. Fun pedal, but not too useful in either of my bands.

I took an interest in the Zen Drive because of Robben Ford. Even did some research on his settings which, BTW, sound great. Still don't play like him, though.
