    Hi! First post on TDPRI,
Anyways, I put an ad on craigslist wanting to buy an Epiphone Casino elitist, I got one response, a blonde finish model for $1000 (didn't really want the natural finish) and the other was a guy selling a Sunburst finish that was stamped "used" and explained how his guitar tech couldn't find why it was a factory 2nd. I saw some pics and will provide them if any one could tell me if thats a bad idea to buy or not, it looks like it looks in completely good condition The guitar is going for $600
I'm torn between an Elitist Casino, 1969 Fender Competition Mustang, or a MIK Casino and an American Standard Strat or Tele......

I had a factory second Epi SG for awhile. It was a really good guitar. I couln't find any problems with it and had no troubles for well over 2 years. I could have been lucky, though?

Those Elitists are made to pretty high standards. Provided its only cosmetic or cheaply replaced I would say go for it.

Completely different animals . You are the one to decide which one suits your needs best .
Play as many guitars you can find and don't buy just by the looks of a guitar .

If i had $1000 to spend i'd surely not go with an Epiphone .

Casino's are the only guitars that floored me in terms of tone. But by feel, the American standard Strats and Teles are top notch.
I'm thinking about going with the Elitist Casino and using the left over money on an American Strat or Tele.

I would look for a 61 re-issue. All American parts including the P90's which are Gibson made pickups. I've owned two and currently have one and it is just a very very well made guitar and sounds great. thanks

PS if any stores have them left you usually can get them nib for around 680-750 depending on if it is trem equipped or not and it comes with a pretty nice hard case

If you can get an elitist for $600... jump all over that. Factory second or not. It's probably just a small cosmetic flaw anyway.

To the best of my knowledge, Epi never stamped any guitars as "USED". As recently as the late 90s they did stamp some as seconds (I had one), but that practice was discontinued. I don't think I've seen anything reliable that they started doing it again.

I think I'd stay away from that Elitist.

I had a BB King Lucille by Epiphone up until a couple of months ago which was stamped USED on the back of the headstock.

Good guitar, had a neck repair which was definitely a factory job, the Gibson service center in town said it was probably sent back under warranty, repaired and sent out again as a second.

Look up Casino's on ebay, almost all of them are stamped used, so idk.
I'd love to get a '61 can't find one to save my life though.

I just looked it up, and one lead on the Gibson forum pointed to this company: http://mircweb.com/index.php

They apparently buy damaged guitars, repair them, and then sell them to dealers and resellers. The USED stamp is from them.

Too much story.. pass on this one.

I own an Elitist Byrdland, fine guitar.

Would I buy a "used" stamped Byrd from a guy who's tech says blah blah and there is a
company that may have repaired it.. in spite of its $600 price.. no. And where did the seller get it ? And is his tech the guy that sold it to the guy.. too many guys..

Scroll down and read this page.. particularly about the serial numbers and the "USED" stamp.
