I have the EHX Small Stone phaser, and it has a volume drop when i turn it on.

Is there a mod that I can do in order to avoid this volume drop?

Also, I want to replace ta DC input jack with a typical one (like the ones that BOSS pedals have). Will I have to do something special, other than remove the original and replace it with the other one?

I have an analogman modded small stone which eliminates the volume drop. Dont know where to find DIY mods.
I replaced the stock power socket with a BOSS style one, keep in mind that the polarity is reversed EH has tip pos Boss has tip neg.
The hardest thing is drilling the mounting hole bigger in the stainless steel case
I would probably just use an external adaptor next time

I think there is, but I have a feeling it may affect the sound of the pedal negatively.

    Volume Drop

This is normal with the Small Stone. The thing has such a unique sound, I wouldn't mess with it.
I just turn up the guitar a bit to compensate.
I"ve had mine for about 30 years and it still blows me away.

"To fix the volume loss problem - The feedback resistor in the input gain stage is R6, 5k6 - change to 10k The mixing resistor in the feedback / color stage is R27, 2k2 - change to 5k6 "

As for the DC jack you can replace it with the BOSS style but you have to get the polarity correct and use the correct adapter. EHX pedals are sleeve ground/negative tip hot...boss are sleeve hot/positive tip negative.

You can find out more info about both mods at Generalguitargadgets.com.

    Thanks a lot!!!

Do you agree with genelovesjez, who mentioned that by changing these resistor, the sound will become worse?

So, the only thing I'll have to do is wire a BOSS jack in reverse?

No...there's quite a few guys on the DIYstompboxes forum that have done the mod and it fixes the volume loss without a noticeable sound difference.

Yeah, you just have to wire the BOSS jack "correctly" so that it will work with a BOSS style adapter. If you go to the GuitarGadgets site they have a pic with the correct wiring. I think the EHX wires are color coded (red and black) so you shouldn't have too much trouble.

You just have to buy a 3.5mm (1/8") Converter (C35) to power Electro-Harmonix, older DOD, and other pedals that require a positive tip 3.5mm (1/8") plug from Visual Sound

Analogman do the mod volume drop but it seems that the new Nano Small Stone is OK

What are you thinking of the Nano Small Stone?

    Hello Guitarmole,

Hope you are still a member and read this topic.

I also have 1979 NYC issue j (I am not sure if it is a issue J, some say H and V3) bit your PCB picture is the same as mine. I only cannot find the right schematic, there is a issue J schematic but is it right ? Can you mark the resistors on the PCB with the values that has to be changed, I can read the colors but maybe there are a lot of the same values ;-)

Thank you and best regards Aart

    SCARED ME!!!

Thought I was going to have to put down my beer and grab my soldering iron until I realized this thread is TEN YEARS OLD!

My little Nano Stone is just fine, thank God!
