I happen to find Brit Floyd to be brlilliant. Money well spent. Never seen any other "tribute" band measure up.

One of the few "old" bands I would have any interest in seeing.

Big Brother’s bass player doing Janis Joplin’s greatest hits? Don’t care. Nokie Edwards doing the best of The Ventures? Count me in!

    Tamworth, 'straya.
Don't bother going to see the Little River Band. Not only are there no original members, there aren't even any Australians in the band.

  8. Good point Bones. I WANT to see KEEF; no other will do.
I have nothing against Phil X, but Bon Jovi isn't the same without Sambora.

What about Deep Purple? Was Ian Gillan an acceptable replacement for whoever that first guy was?
Steve Perry was not the original singer in Journey. Neither was Kevin Cronin in REO Speedwagon. Bruce Dickinson was not the original singer in Iron Maiden. Even Bon Scott was not the original singer in AC/DC.
I don't think any of those guys sounded exactly like the original singers, and those bands achieved much more success with those replacements.

I'm going to see a solo Neil Young show tonight - I really hope he's the original.

Let me rephrase that. I think that in most cases, the replacement singer should sound like exactly like the singer in the "classic" lineup, not necessarily the "original" lineup.

...and the amount of people who've mentioned Pink Floyd on this thread without insisting it's the Syd Barrett line up.

But the classic line up is in the eye of the beholder.

So many people on here seem to have such exacting demands of who can be in a band, they're just musicians trying to make a living ( ok, the current version of Queen is awful but Brian and Roger already have a lot of money). Perhaps on a guitar forum they might get some sympathy for that.

Ah, you mean like Genesis, with Phil Collins as the lead singer. :D

Y'see, I wouldn't walk across the street to see 'Brit Floyd' or the 'Australian Pink Floyd'... I've seen PBS pumping them bigtime and stare at it blankly, imagining all the time, money and effort that's been put into filling out a template.

In years past, we'd discount musicians who were this obviously derivative; now those same players just blatantly copy the source material and call it a 'tribute'. Those 'derivative' bands are starting to look pretty good now.

I don't make any demands about band lineups. They can do whatever they want. Replace Freddy with a hologram, for all I care. I just won't give them my money.

Oh, he's the real one. I guess we'll be seeing more and more solo NY shows. So many of his past bandmates are no longer with us.

Fortunately, his solo shows are quite good.

I would care if the surviving members of The Band got back together.
Maybe Bob could sit in with them too.

I saw Don Cherry and that night Blackwell was unable to make it, so it was all backups.
Very sad show, I think Don was smoking crack, screaming at the drummer.

Sun Ra kept changing members yet kept some old sax players that couldn't even stand up while playing for fear of falling down. Great band.
The artists are IMO essential to the art.
