...on CBS This Morning Saturday? That lady is just a treasure. The Tele content will smack you on the face. She wrapped up the segment this morning with a song off her new album "We Get By", called "Change". It's a grinding, griity song, driven by a Tele and Vox sound that is great. I love when something catches you out of the blue like this. Check it out.

From the live session this morning. Excuse the ad:

We've seen her a couple of times opening for Dylan in the past few years. She can still summon the funk at will.

Rick’s 53 Tele (he finally scored one) into a Vox AC15. Great performances . That band is flawless and she’s still so on top of it .

I'm usually forced to watch that show, but this time we headed out early to do some hiking for the day.

Hate to miss this lady - she's something else!

It doesn't get any "real-er" than Mavis..

Radio station down here was discussing the new album couple of weeks ago, was horrified to hear them refer to her being in the Staples Sisters band, then when they mentioned Ben Harper was producing, this ditz said how she could spot his playing a mile off (it's Rick H on the track they played, he sounds nothing like BH), damn I was mad!

Mavis was on Marc Maron's podcast last week as well. Great interview. She talked about the Staple Singers' involvement in the civil rights movement, opened up quite a bit about her personal life, and of course, talked a lot about music. Her Bob Dylan impersonation is spot on and hilarious.

Very interesting, including her explanation of how the band toured the Old South using the Green Book. She talks about how the folks at Gulf brand gas stations were decent to them, when most others were not. Made me glad I had tended often to go to those Gulf Stations(though I never knew until recently).

    From her Rolling Stone interview...

The Staples were routinely in danger while traveling the Southern gospel circuit, often getting hassled and worse. Mavis recalls one journey in 1964, when, as the family’s late-night driver, she went inside a Memphis gas station to get a receipt. The attendant called her the n-word; Pops punched him, and the family ended up in jail after the attendant said he’d been robbed. “I’ve never been so scared in my life,” says Mavis. “I was happy to see we were going to jail – I thought they were gonna take us out into the woods and lynch us.”

Count me also as a fan. As well as being immensely talented Mavis seems like a great human being.

This is quite pleasant, and the guitar sound vies with the lovely Mavis for attention and beauty.
