has anyone else tried Danish oil on a maple fretboard? It looks ok I just wonder if it will last.

It won't do much on a hard maple board at all. It's not really a "film forming" finish - it's a penetrating stain with hardening resins - so if you are looking for surface protection and something that will stay clean it might not be the best choice.
