Has anyone here done the wampler mod for the CS-3?

I know Brent Mason had this done to his CS-3, before moving onto the 2 knob keeley.

Just wondering if it's worth it, or if I should get a new compressor.

So far, after trying a CS-2, keeley, and wampler ego...I preferred the keeley. Seems like it had more punchiness and bottom end...got me closer to Brent Mason sound I thought than the CS-2 he used on famed recordings.

From what I do know about the Wampler modded CS-3's is there is a value changed to give more bass response...twice of what most CS-3 mods call for.

Are you asking about the IndyGuitarist mods wampler did before becoming a big pedal maker?

I have not tried those CS-3 mods in particular, but I have done several CS3 mods over the years. My recommendation is to diagnose what really bothers you about the CS3, then see if there is a component change or two that can help with that. You may not need a full mod - just light changes.

If you are searching for a sound - I would recommend trying different pedals. If you really like the sound of the CS-3 but want something specific changed - find the mod for that.

I owned one about a year ago. Is it an improvement over the stock CS-3? I liked it better than the stock one, but for my taste there are pretty good comps out there for that country pickin' sound. The MXR custom comp is a good comp for that.

To my ears, Vince Gill has the best country chicken pickn' tone/sound of anyone I've ever heard. He has used a stock CS-3 for years. When I realized that, I focused more on my hands than my gear. Not saying you should do that, but just something to think about.

I've heard a lot of good players that use that Barber Tone Press. I belive it has a blend knob which is a very useful tool on a compressor.

    Just my $.02

Yes, it is an improvement over stock, unless you have an MIJ
    as Vince Gill does.

Trying to cop someone's tone is a dead end in and of itself.
And trying to get Mason's sound without his pickup set-up
is a dog chasing it's own tail.

will the wampler cs3 have the punchiness of a keeley compressor?
