I had a guy come over last week, who is classically trained violinist, and has recently gotten together with some guys to start a Country band, of the Red Dirt School. I gave him an overview of what he would find in my book on theory and scales for fiddle and had him rock back and forth on some arpeggios and a little major pentatonic fill stuff while I called out changes.

Yesterday I tried to find some examples of Country back up fiddle on YouTube for him to see some in action (or inaction, for a lot of the time). Most of the Red Dirt live stuff had no fiddle; just guitar bands, and most of the older stuff, Grand Old Oprie and all, naturally focuses on the singer most of the time, although you can catch statches.

There must be some Country band videos where you can see the whole band for a period, so he can see what is being done. Can anyone steer me to some?

    Leon,

Didn't know you were a fiddler?

PM me with info on your book. Jamie

Now that's a challenge to find C&W backup fiddling videos.

Will look for more this eve.

Try these for backing up the vocal.

That's what I'm looking for. Thanks. I would never call myself a fiddler. I know how to play the fiddle; I just can't do it. Here's the book.

I was handicapped by not being able to remember many artist names. I remembered Stoney LaRu (sic?) and one or two others, including what's his name. Thanks a million.

You might want to expand your search to include bluegrass. Bluegrass fiddlers do a lot of backing up singers, and the technique is basically the same for country.

Maybe search for Vassar Clements. On songs, Vassar tends to just keep playing the whole time. He gets close to the mic for his break and then backs off for backup. It's amazing how well he stays away from the melody when he's backing up the singer.

That's a good thought. I had sort of rejected Bluegrass, thinking it might be a little busy, but maybe I should be rethink. (Or think better in the first instance.)

Jason Boland & Kevin Fowler might also be good names to YouTube.

Check out Gene Elder who plays with the Ace in the Hole Band for George Strait. He actually plays a viola but puts on a clinic whenever he draws a bow as do all the guys in that band!

    I'll second Vassar Clements. He's a master.

How about some Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys?
