    Hi Guys

This is a quick question, i bought a GFS neck that is a bit average (but amazing for the price....to be fair) that i am using as a practice neck for a first build, My question as above is that the amber shellac has given an awesome tint to the neck but i want to spray a clear 2 pack satin over the top for durability.

I have researched and many people have discussed clear nitro over but not poly.

Will poly be okay over sprayed shellac?

Is it made from fresh flakes? Is it dewaxed?

Lacquer will tolerate some wax in the shellac, as I understand it, but oil based products like poly, not so much.

Hi Colt, man you are the guru in this section!!

Its from a can branded Zinsser......and was looking to do a poly 2 pack....

While we are at it, can shellac be thinned with lacquer thinners?

And is Iso propyl alcohol the same as the alcohol recommended for use with shellac?

Then no, you shouldn't put poly over Zinsser amber. Zinssers amber contains 5-6% shellac. Zinssers actually came out with a special dewaxed shellac sealer because they were having problems with polyurethane being applied over their regular canned shellac.

The reason I know all of that is because not too long ago, we were talking about using nitro over top of zinssers. I wanted to find out if it was waxed or not, and came up on a lot of good reading from both Zinssers(Rustoleum) and professional wood finishers.

I've used poly over Zinsser's without a problem before. I don't think there would be an issue as long as the shellac was fully cured before adding poly. I also may have just gotten lucky, after reading Colt's post I'm starting to think that may have been the case.
