There’s something about the closed interior of a car that intensifies bad smells. I remember I had some rotting food I left behind inside a car and I could not believe how it smelled so intense. I had to roll down the window immediately.

I’d bet that the something is that it’s a closed space.

If I have food in the car , take it out,and leave the windows rolled up. I will get to her my hyper sensitive wife complain to leave the windows left open.

You need to tie a string around your finger to remind you to throw out the trash when you're finished eating! (don't eat the string, they're bad for you) (I know)

Lack of air circulation will tend to exacerbate odors ...

Yes. It’s like an amplifier of smell

Vacuum well, then use Aerosol carpet cleaner, clean windows and dash panel, etc.
Air it out with open windows and doors, and put a coupla scented dryer sheets under the seats.
    It worked for me.

Stick a dryer sheet on the dash under the sun for a couple of hours. Your car will smell like laundry. Forever.

I once jumped in my pickup and sat on a large full carton of iced coffee. It exploded soaking my shorts and then ran down onto the carpet. Even after soaking it up with a super soaker sponge the interior stank for months. Eventually my heavy smoking overpowered the smell of rancid milk. It's not pleasant but it can save you a small fortune on people wanting rides around town.

You can spray cheap aftershave on the carpet and it masks bad smells after a while. A product called Nil odour also works.

I don't think I've ever eaten in my CRV, but I've only had it since 2010. I like going inside someplace and eating, who are you going to talk to in a car, the steering wheel?

Umm...yeah, rotting food left in a small space with limited air flow definitely won't smell like roses.

had a guy barf in my volkswagen.... worst part, they'd borrowed the car and thought the solution was going to the coin op car wash to wash it out... got in car the next morning... first time I put on the brakes... a wave of soapy water and barf rolls forward...

Needless to say, when I returned home, I rousted that POS, pulled the seats and he pulled up the carpet and scrubbed out the inside of my car... as I recall, he had difficulty seeing out of one eye... I picked up a carpet remnant (talk about 70's solutions) and made custom carpet kit (mastic and all) No smell after he scrubbed and scrubbed...

The solution to pollution is dilution... lots of air and more air and more air and more air... after scrubbing... I cannot imagine why you'd leave rotting food in a car.

When I worked at the fruit company, a guy left the company angrily, he left his company car in the parking lot with a bunch of banana peals inside... the car folks didn't look for the car for a couple of weeks.. His manager was out of town when they found it so, it fell to me to meet up with his secretary and the car folks to open up the car (confidential info in the car apparently) anyway, when we opened it... about 6 million flies came pouring out... before we opened the door we looked in and we thought he'd painted the inside of the windows!

Anyway, it was a bad smell... The car folks decided to tow the car as they did not want to get in it to drive it.... I did have to reach into it to get the guy's gear etc...

Not as bad as rotting corpse, but close.

You sound like a candidate for the new and improved Steam FX Pro, As Seen On TV. Says right in the commercial that it removes exploding ice coffee stank.

Actually, I have an older steamer and it's a handy gizmo to have around.

Steam would probably work well to kill the bacteria that cause the smells. An ionizer would also help. That stank ends up everywhere when the sun makes it sweat throughout the interior leaving a nasty film on the inside of the windshield.
