    Hi all,

As per popular request ;-) I'll be posting the progress of my 3rd build here.

This one will be a fret less P-style bass for my brother. He wants the position of the frets to be marked, so I will use a very special ingredient which will give its name to the bass. More on that when we arrive at that stage :)

It'll take some time to complete the build since it starts to be a bit chilly and dark over here, and my shop doesn't have a roof, so please bear with me.

I went to my carpenter friend this morning in order to plane and thickness the wood : walnut for the body, cherry for the neck, and cumaru for the fretboard.

Then I went out to cut a little, quite chilly today...

Cut a bit of cherry to sandwich between the walnut, and glued thing together.

You might wonder what the hole is for... I made a bracelet for my better half in order to test oiling the walnut as a finish:

Not too bad! I think it'll work great for the natural finish I'm planning to have.

On the next episode, next sunday: finish the templates (need some sanding and ca glue strengthening), then make the truss rod groove, and cut the body to shape.

    So, what happened since last?
Ah, yes, last weekend it was snowing, so it didn't get much done, but today the weather was better, and I had the luxury of some alone time!

I spent quite a lot of time trying to get the blank straight again, since my gluing left the blanks somewhat unaligned... So I got to learn how to use a planer... Which left some unexpected marks. I probably had the blade too low. But I sand the rest, and it looks good. So I now cut the body to shape:

I have a couple of cracks due to knots as you can see. The biggest on the right is just superficial as far as I can see, so it will disappear with the big round over i will do. For the two other, I'm considering using epoxy : 20171126_143920.jpg
But is it really necessary? I don't care leaving the cracks open, as long as it's stable.

Oh, and I received the truss rods I ordered from g&w

    That's all for today :)

Not much done lately, with the Christmas rush and all, but I got time to true the neck templates this weekend at least.

Interesting guess, but as far as I know, no fish will be harmed under the construction of this bass :)

So I finished the master template today, made a copy of it, and routed the body to shape. Looking good so far! BTW what's the depth of the pu cavity for a p-bass?

No fish glue, just regular white glue... Love the fish sticker!

So, I got some time this week-end to work on this. I have the chance of having a friend who has a bandsaw, so I visited him to get the scarf joint for the neck cut to 11 degrees.
Back home, I used the head part as a big sanding block to get a tight fit between the two pieces. WhatsApp Image 2017-12-17 at 14.59.58.jpeg
Next, I just put white glue there, put a pinch of salt on top of it to keep the piece to slide when applying pressure (a trick I learned on this forum :) ) and put some clamps !

Just waiting for the glue to cure now, then I'll rout the truss rod groove before cutting the neck to shape.

Between food and presents, some time for making wood chips and sawdust...

Routed the neck pocket and the pickup cavity, chiselled the corners of the latter, rounded the edges of the body ever so slightly ;)

The body is now 2.6kg,hope it's not too light when I still have to rout the control cavity?

Ok guys I need your help: I rounded the edges of the body, so I'm ending up with about 1.5 cm (3/5") that is approximately flat to put the jack plate. Problem is I don't know what kind of jack plate will fit there. I have an oval one, but that's 2.5cm. I looked at the classic tele round ones, but that's 2cm.

So I was considering using a jack socket/strap pin variant, but on a bass I will end up needing a cavity under the bridge... Not so good.

How about bending the plate to fit? Not sure it'll work.

Last thing I considered was sanding flat the place where the jack plate should be, but that might look ugly, right?

So what do you guys recommend?

Here are a couple pics to illustrate.
