Thinking of changing up the look on my tele (CS 50's Journeyman Relic, 2-tone sunburst ash body, maple fretboard). Right now it has a cream 5-hole 3-ply guard on it, as the original 1-ply white 5-hole that came on it always looked so stark white.

What do you guys think of a black pickguard, like a black '52 bakelite style 5-hole (with the nitro clear coat) on it? It's the polar opposite of the original white guard, but no other color besides white, parchment, cream or black would like "right" on it, and I've done the first 3. Seems like it would have a tougher/meaner look to it. My original thought when I think of black pickguard/sunburst body/maple neck is David Gilmour's Esquire, even though that one had a 3-tone sunburst on it.

    What say ye, tele brethren?

I changed the white pickguard on my avatar Tele to a black 5 hole bakelite one (actually bought an Esquire one and cut the humbucker hole myself). A bigger photo to show you more clearly below. It's a Classic 50s in the 2 tone poly finish that I've dulled down by wet sanding then a light buff, so not as nice a finish as yours will no doubt have. Should give you some idea though.

I did a thread a while back on the history of sunburst Teles here: http://www.tdpri.com/threads/history-of-sunburst-telecasters-and-esquires.831509/

Look at the before/after on @telex76 's guitar in post #13 of page 1 of that thread. Also check out post #80 on page 4 and contrast with post #84 on page 5 of that thread. There are also shots of Gilmour's Esquire on p. 4 of that thread.

I think the black makes the whole thing moodier. I think "meaner," too, as you say. I'm all for it.

I like black, try it and see if you like it.
If you don't then you will just need to get another tele to put the guard on.:)

I think a black guard looks best on sunburst; but aesthetics are definitely matters of opinion~

And here's a 3-tone sunburst (what's with all the humbuckers?)

Black looks killer with 2 tone sunburst.
@KelvinS1965 pics are tele porn for me, that is my fav look.

I had single ply black on my AV52 in my avatar for a while (see below) which I liked, but I got kind of tired of it and recently went back to the stock white.
I think it was mainly due to the gold hardware

All my Teles have black guards, so that's my two cents... 20190609_084550.jpg

tele.jpeg Mine's a three-tone burst, but I think it looks good with an Esquire guard on it.

I changed from stock white to black on my Highway One Texas Teles where required; one of the 2-tones (on the left) came with a thin black one already swapped. I change those out to Bakelite.

The first of my two original genuine Telecasters that I still have, a '12 serial number (purchased NIB mid 2013) version MiM Nashville Deluxe Tele - it started with a tort pickguard. That went into my parts storage with the plastic and decal still on it, as I went straight to a black one (I moved to a Bakelite here as well, cutting the middle pickup aperture myself in the process).

EDIT: I also changed the pickups and in the process went to black with middle AND neck pickups - the set is an assembly of DiMarzio Area family pickups, and they offer a black finished metal cover on their Tele style neck pickups... so I went for it.

I purchased a black bakelite 5 hole pickguard from StewMac. It arrived the other day. It doesn't fit my 2003 Fender American Highway One Texas. The top/right screw hole is off by 1/8th inch I'll have to hog out that hole to get the screw in. I don't change pickguards often but the last 3 I purchased none of them fit.

Buy a sheet of bakelite and cut your own. That’s what I did, but man! Figuring out where to cut out for the neck pickup had me cussin a little.
